Have anyone tried to run debian unstable on an openvz vps?

  • Yes, it works wonderfully.

  • I think libc wasn't working with the kernel the last time I tried it. Maybe I did something wrong or it was buggy.

  • You need an openvz VPS with 2.6.32 if I remember right.

  • the provider had 2.6.18. why don't they upgrade?

    Because they're lazy.

    That's stupid!

    Stability first.

    Isn't 2.6.32 stable?

  • No

  • Actually 2.6.32 is mostly stable as long as you don't use vswap.

  • 'Mostly stable' isn't good enough for production equipment.

I can agree with that however some providers use 2.6.32 and don't have issues with it.

Everyone's luck runs out eventually :P We've seen that .32 will randomly lock up nodes for essentially no reason after some time, and until that (and some other issues) are resolved, we've deemed .32 unacceptable for use on client nodes.

Edit: It's also worth noting that there are plenty of providers out there that don't hold to what we consider acceptable standards :3

    That's true. Like IPXcore.

  • Debian Unstable isn't really unstable.

  • If you really want to run sid just get a KVM VPS and be done with it.

    I don't want. Just asking.

  • I think trying it would be faster than asking :) And then you know for sure.

I don't have spare servers like the majority of you does.

  • Abuse some host then. Most EU hosts must offer some kind of money-back guarantee.

    Noooooo.

  • Sounds like a personal problem. We're not your guinea pigs.

    Ipxcore doesn't use .32
    @Damian you do?

  • 2.6.32-042stab053.5 =)

I think 2.6.32 has problems with certain chipsets.

  • OT: can we get a OneTwo category? :P

@OneTwo: Ubuntu Server 11.10 is a nice alternative if you want something newer than Squeeze on a .18 OVZ...

  • @quirkyquark said: OT: can we get a OneTwo category? :P

That would be bitchin! Just don't forget to block @Aldryic from having access there.

  • If your host runs .32, they hate you.

    BuyVM node 37: 2.6.32-6-pve, up 46 days
Quickweb Pheonix: 2.6.32-274.3.1.el5.028stab094.3 uptime 87 days, reliable as an anvil.
    SecureDragon: 2.6.32-238.19.1.el5.028stab092.2

Then I love them for that ;)

  • @DotVPS said: Maybe they have a big uptime on the node , and don't want to do a reboot to upgrade if its working fine for other uses?

I was using some sarcasm there.
