location - LA
*large storage and bandwidth
*fast speed
*ubuntu desktop pre-installed (sorry non techie here)
*remote connect via VNC
*be able to use as proxy or vpn

will use this as remote desktop, no website or apps to run.

our old vps got sold to a new company and seems customer service is poor
so we are now looking for new home.

That's on the opposite side of the continent (from LA).

  • Are you looking for Linux or windows? Most providers don't offer something like Ubuntu desktop by default but it's really easy to set up. https://panel.cinfu.com/knowledgebase/6/GUI-Desktop-XWindows-Gnome-installation-on-Linux-VPS-Server-with-Ubuntu-OS.html

If you're okay with Windows (180 days trial) in Dallas, check us out!

  • Grab an INIZ or similar cheap VPS and throw LXDE+NoMachine on it, you don't need a full Gnome/KDE Desktop just to do remote desktop, i.e. browsing etc..

    Shameless plug for installer script:
    https://www.sonicboxes.com/lowmem-debian-lxde-nomachine-script/

    It's far superior to VNC/xRDP.

Ubuntu desktop can be good also, but i am not technical person - wish the host will install it for us.

Linux / Ubuntu Desktop or Windows Trial will be okay with us. Will use most of the browser and Office applications.

I am happy to set you up with a windows or Ubuntu remote desktop (Ububtu via NX) as long as you understand management of the server after that is up to you.

2GB Xen offers in Miami might be a good choice: http://lowendtalk.com/discussion/19720/xen-pv-hvm-usa-uk-it-2gb-dedicated-ram-6-80-bsd-linux-windows-3-00-p-year-special

there are a few providers offering desktops (us included) out of the box, linux and windows, BUT, if you cannot copy-paste a few commands to install yourself, it is likely will get hijacked somehow sooner rather than later.
Fortunately, you get notified about updates, but, even so, you need a bit of knowledge to manage many things such as plugins for browsers, firewall, recover from a crash situation when the desktop no longer starts, say, after one of the botched ubuntu upgrades.
Maybe you need a managed server ?

@stevenph I have written a script that installs Ubuntu 12.04 Desktop automatically from a minimal installation so if you know how to connect to SSH and download/create a file, you can use this. PM me if you're interested.

We could offer you a Windows 2008/12 with the following specification: 2 Cores, 1 GB RAM, 40 GB HDD for $17.50 /mo

All servers are fully managed and comes with unmeterd bandwidth :) packages can be found here: http://www.quadcone.com/vps

We could offer you a free genuine windows licence on your server as well. PM me for more info

Seems pricey. compared to the current offers here at LET & LEB

  • That all depends on what you're using it for, and especially if you need it for use by your company or just you-- if the former, you may want to pay more for rock-solid stability.

Overall, you may not be a techie, but you should still consider that Ubuntu Desktop is quite bloated & slow for remote work. You may have a much better experience using an Ubuntu Server template, and then:

    apt-get update

    apt-get install xrdp x11-common icewm

Xrdp is a lot more responsive, with a wide client support and client build in to windows and easily abtainable on any *nix distro. IceWM is about as light-weight of a desktop environment as you can get without leaving modern menus behind or messing about with config files.

As an example, I took advantage of yesterday's LET offer for $6/year 128mb vps from bandwagonhosting (https://bandwagonhost.com/cart.php) and setup Xrdp & Icewm, and it's a snappy as any local desktop.

  • i be only using for personal use. any more offers?
