What speeds are you all getting with OpenVPN?

Mine seems to top out at 2-3mbps while my internet connection is normally ~20, seems a bit low?

Where are you located and where is the server?

I'm located in Atlantic Canada and in the servers in Charlotte, NC. I get ~90 ping to it.

  • How fast can you download from the VPS you're hosting OpenVPN on?

  • That really slow. Mine is just the same without OpenVPN.
Try using UDP port (53 for example), and disable cipher.

50-80mbps, so the connection isn't slow..

I was already using UDP but I just switched the port and set cipher none, it's still about the same, about ~0.5mbps faster though that could be just testing variations

I also get that from my Luxembourg dedicated server, I can max out my internet connection downloading from it but OpenVPN only gives me 20Mbit when my connection is 50Mbit. I haven't bothered to look through all the crap and find out why..

would that really matter? it's like comparing speed w/ http and https

try usign multi part downloader like jdownloader what speeds do you get under openvpn? btw what version are you using?

If properly configured, using a server you have a good ping with that has ample free resources, your speed shouldn't really be affected, or it should be negligible. I set it up on a box in Chicago that I had a ping of 66 with, downloaded a file at 2.1 MB/s outside of OpenVPN, downloaded the same file inside of it and got 2.0 MB/s, and that was likely arbitrary.

I'd make sure it's not configured to throttle you or anything, and that system load is nominal and all that. If it's still not working, it might just be your peering/latency/bandwidth cap with the box you're using, or the box's with the rest of the net. Best of luck.

Of course it is matter. Encryption just adds overhead to the traffic and CPU.

I've tried both 2.2 and the 2.3 beta, speeds are same on both.

Could this be a issue on the host node? I kinda want to submit a ticket but since this is unmanaged I don't know what I could ask

  • with vpn i get higher upload speed for some reason
i get the max on dl though

From eastern europe to Charlotte, NC I'm getting around 7-8Mbps through openvpn...

My ping is 185 ms -- and the speed is pretty steady... What are you using to test your speed? Speedtest.net? What location are you chosing?

(btw - you mentioned Charlotte, I'm with Hostigation and getting these speeds)

  • with vpn i get higher upload speed for some reason

You don't, the compression just makes it look like that.

I'm trying the default location chosen as well as some in New York and one in Boston, as well as my own ISP's "speed check" site, both show up ~3-4mbps.

It does not seem like my VPS's upload speed is limited either as this is the result from trying to download from it from another VPS
