Customers are the most effective uptime monitors and 2AM angry calls/emails are the best notifications.
Even better; instead of paying them, they pay you! (most of the time, that is)
For self-hosting, I've been satisfied with a basic Grafana+Prometheus+Node Exporter setup; might be overkill if you just wanted a ping monitor but a great way to put your idlers to good use.

I like Uptime Kuma, fully selfhosted and free (besides the cost of a small vps of course). A lot of the paid services make you pay per request, self hosting uptime kuma means you can set the intervals as low as you like without having to worry.
I'm using Better Uptime and it works really well. Got a lifetime deal on Appsumo.

I use NodePing, but it's strictly an uptime monitoring service. It's very reliable though

I have Uptime Kuma installed and used in the GCE Always free VM(e2-micro).
I think this tool is convenient because it can be exposed to the outside as a status page and the utilization rate can be displayed as a percentage.
Looks great. But seems to get heavy on the wallet as you increase monitors. But definitely seems highly rated and reviewed
