Download from MaxKVM is very slow

Hi
I have a VPS at MaxKVM, 4CPU, 8GB RAM and have some websites there.

Today, I move my website backup size 600Mb from there to my VPS at HostHatch 10GB port speed.

I used wget command to download the backup file. But the speed is only 175kb/s
I tried to wget from Racknerd VPS, the speed also the same
I tried to wget from Vultr VPS at Japan and the speed is only 624kb/s

I think it's very slow. I've contacted with MaxKVM but they said the network is ok from their check and the problem should be "There is an issue with your configuration either on the server".

They test themselves and the speed is around 15Mb/s

I run yabs and below are the results

  • Some information need to be provided:

    • Which server your MaxKVM located?
    • Which server HostHatch Located?
    • How much the latency from MaxKVM - HostHatch? Post result with MTR too
    • What kind of file backup, a lot of small files? Or a little but large files?
    • Have you tried over IPv6 on MaxKVM?
    • Have you tried using rclone or rsync?

From the result of iperf3, your MaxKVM network seems normal to me.

If you don't have >150 IQ, you are deemed unqualified to manage a virtual machine on MaxKVM platform.

Many clients have canceled their services at MaxKVM, and you could be the next.

Holy shit! That's some "blackbox personality" attitude seen only with hosthatch. Provider calling customer a retard :D

HostHatch is in US, Racknerd also in US
    MaxKVM is in Singapore

I am not a pro sysadmin, just know some basic command and usually use wget to get file from a working url. The backup file is one file, size 700Mb

Tried to turn off security plugin on the website and turn off ufw firewall as well but the speed still slow

  • Try to use Axel, it will speed up a lot.

  • Wordfence but I turned it off

I am not sure about relation between Wordfence (wordpress) with network speed. But could you do come command from MaxKVM VPS and share the result here.

After get hint from @chocolateshirt I found the reason is Cloudflare, I turned off Cloudflare on my domain then the speed increase to 35Mb/s.

Could some one please tell me how to configurate my domain so I still get high speed with Cloudflare enabled?

Should I assign an ipv6 to my vps then create an A record for my domain to that ipv6?

    Thanks

    Great, @MaxKVM is fragrant.. ❤️❤️❤️

Tried to download from other VPS on Singapore, the result similar with only 175 KB/s.

The issue is on Cloudflare and it is out of our control. If you want to experiment, there is some suggestion:

    • Upload/push the backup directly from your website (hosthatch) to MaxKVM
    • Enable IPv6 on your HostHatch server, then add it as AAAA record on Cloudflare, remove the IPv4 A record, try wget again from MaxKVM
    • Disable Cloudflare DNS during wget download, then enable again after transfer complete

You should add a separate subdomain for downloading backups.
Disable Cloudflare proxy on that subdomain (gray cloud).

But, if I enabled Cloudflare on my domain, this issues will effect the speed of my website as well as user experiences (ex: download files) ??

    Yes.
CDN is suitable for small files such as embedded images and stylesheets, which are cached at the edge.
If you are offering certain files for download (i.e. user needs to click a download button), they should be served from a separate subdomain that does not go through CDN.

Even for small files, 175kb/s is slow to load a website. Need to solve this issues

Maybe, this is the limit to ask people upgrade their plan? It's good with no problem before.

I created an AAAA record and point to server ipv6 but the speed also the same.
We get good download speed only after stop the Cloudflare.

Could some expert please test and give us some hints or solution?

Cloudflare is the very good gateway to hide the IP and keep the websites safe and I want to use it.

    Thanks

Even for small files, 175kb/s is slow to load a website.

    You should optimize your pages.
Aim at no more than 300KB per page.
At 175KB/s, the page loads in 2 seconds, which is acceptable.

Moreover, the CDN should be caching static assets such as images and stylesheets, so that it's downloaded from your origin only once every few hours.
You can confirm whether assets are being served from edge caching by looking at cf-cache-status response header.
If it says MISS, ensure your origin server sets cache-control response header to something like "max-age=43200".

CF free doesn't limit anything unless you configured it to.

CF Pro is mainly additional optimization + your cache is served from the nearest datacenter, compared to free (most of the time).

CF Free limits everything beyond "reasonable usage". Includes even API call rate limit. Go and ask CF support about limitations.

Does the free account throttle/limit download speed compared to Pro account? As in op use case?

Only cf can respond to that without wild speculations. In most cases, such speed limit is not cf problem.
