Is there a reason NOT to go with CentOS 8?

Any known disadvantages from Centos 7 or Ubunto 20 LTS? I mean for VPS hosting.
Thanks!

CentOS 8's EOL date - even the stream variety - is before the EOL of CentOS 7.

RAM requirements? Stupid stuff like removal of btrfs?

Good point, I hadn't considered that. I usually stick with ubuntu, I was just wondering about CentOS 7 and 8

Yes, I usually stick with Debian based distros, or Debian itself, but CWP is Centos based, and looks pretty good. But maybe I shouldn't leave my comfort zone.

Got with Almalinux. Would say it's the same as CentOS bcs is compatible with RHEL.

Early EOL date. Go for Alma or Rocky if you want free RHEL-based distro.

    It's not Debian..

I think you meant to say it was not Windows 2008 R2 :)

Not since the guys at CloudLinux released AlmaLinux, you can switch practically at any time with a oneliner*

  • The most important disadvantage is that the End is Nigh.

    I concur.

Out of curiosity, why is AlmaLinux better than CentOS 7?

Nobody said that it is "better" than CentOS 7, they are just saying it is a more supported alternative to CentOS 8.

I wanted to say never trust anyone who breaks a promise but maybe that’s a bit too far, we all make mistakes and have to correct our paths sometimes.

But the LTS promise of probably the most utilized production OS is a bit more sacred than “I said you could have my fries but I ate them.”

  • I don't know why people just don't go with free RH and get the most stable and supported OS.

Almalinux & RockyLinux are both greated. My personal recommendation is RockyLinux, and we've already started to use it in prod over Centos 8.
