"Cheap" Dual CPU upgrades for Dell R720?

Would you go for: dual E5-2650v2 or E5-2689v1 or something else around the same ebay pricepoint?

E5-2650v2 has F16C instructions and takes less power than 2689v1 but I wonder if theres anything else worth nothing at 26xx v1/v2 range?

As for F16C, I'm not sure how it would help in performance versus without it.

  • Honestly I'd personally just grab an old ryzen 1700 at that price point. Better performance, ecc support and not as vulnerable to exploits as older intel chips.

The V1 is end of life and I am betting dell doesn't offer any bios updates. The v2 is prob isn't too far behind. With all the intel security issues the newer v2 is prob your better bet

Suppose that it must be dual E5-26xx v1/v2 for some reason, and I only care about raw performance, and I dont mind the vulnerabilities as I run it on proxmox that allows me to apply some patches on software side.

Definitely E5-2650v2, the 2689v1s are not worth the power costs (>2A).

I think the 1st Gen Ryzen idea is actually a lot closer to what you might actually want to do.

The vulnerabilities aren't a problem per se, just that the patches for them will make those processors perform even worse.

  • Why are you suggesting ryzen? I really doubt thats gonna fit into an Intel server mobo.

cause you can easily buy a mobo for <80$? not all that complicated

2650v2 my favorite for old server config. Cheap as fuck. Not takes too much power. And also good performance vs price.
We run few HP C7000 full with Gen8 bl460c Blades and dual XEON e5 2650v2. Not bad.

    Also got v1/v2/v3/v4 2640, 2680, 2667, 2680, 1650, 1630, 2620, 2670 etc. Single and Dual.
(all HPE Apollo A6000 or HPE c7000 blades, different gen)

    Would just take the 2650v2.

Hows the power usage with dual 2650v2 compared to dual 2667v2 ? How many amps would I need for either of those? :(

Also, would you go with High density 1.5v 16GB DDR3 kits or lower density 1.5v 8GB DDR3 kits if you wanted to save power consumption? I suppose the 16GB kits would be better for their lower power use, since there would be less of them in numbers?

Generally speaking i always check intel ARK at TDP.
You can calculate TDP +20% for other components to have some good number of power to calculate future power bill. Not exact (depends on usage) but a good number to have calculations.

I would indeed take the 16GB instead if they are not much more. Not only because of power but also for future upgrades.
What about the 1,35V ones? DDR3L? Does it matter?

To be honest, i never compared more deeper. if your power bill is multiple thousands of euros per month, you dont care anymore anyway much haha.
I also save alot of money, not hosting here in Germany. Netherlands power is much cheaper.
I just use the said calculation scheme to calculate this for my pricing.

I have checked some servers for you:
