Free speech hosting - Dedicated Server

jon230jon230 Member

Hey,

I have a german site that contains "free speech" political videos.
They have nothing to do with nazi propaganda or so, but may be considered as "hate speech" by squeamish persons.

I need a hoster that provides a dedicated server with 1 GBit/s and at least 30 TB of traffic. I also need >200GB SSD (preferably 2x for RAID 1) and 16 GB of RAM and 4 cores.
It should be located near but not in Germany.

My budget is < 100 € per month.

Thank you in advance

    I've said it many times.

If you need protection for political related content, you want to be in the States.

Which one would you take in the States?
My experience is that most of them are kind of expensive.

lol, looking for low end political protection now?

A fine recipe for disaster, ain't it?

Your issue isn't going to be cost so much as finding a datacenter that has a spine.

If you want a dedicated server, talk with Versaweb. @Rob_T has a very libertarian take on things ("I may not agree but i'll defend your right to say it").

If you want a VPS, our slices in Vegas are great, especially with the storage addons.

We have the same sort of policy, it's enshrined in our TOS.

I think a VM won't be enough for my site. I also want to encrypt my drives. But thanks for your help.

Well, I think for 100€, there should be a romanian/american hoster that gives me what I need.

You should be able to still encrypt "drives", eg. images and volumes, just fine on a VM. But still - if you have a high-traffic site, then you should probably look at a dedicated so you can hog your resources on-demand. Regardless, I'll consider both VPS and dedicated -

    You have a few options:

    1984.is [fixed typo*] (Iceland)
    Versaweb, as @Francisco pointed.
BuyVM (my personal choice) (Your Mom's House)
    Njalla (Sweden?)
    Orange Website (Iceland)
    Edis (Iceland)
FlokiNET (Iceland, NO warez/porn/etc., but ALLOWS political free speech, rumor has it they will even go to court to protect customers)
    SpectraIP (Neeeeederlends)
Sharkserve.rs (Russia, claim to be "bulletproof")
    QuadraNet (Recommended by @Nyr, US-based)
Cockbox (Recommended by @jed, troll hosting, slow but reliable)

Of course you can, but this would be pointless, since the keys are stored in the RAM, and could easily be extracted.
Njalla only offers virtual servers with low bandwith. BuyVM looks pretty good to be honest, but I would still have no dedicated server. Versaweb only offers 15 TB of bandwith for their hybrid servers. And 1986.is doesn't seem to exist?

    How about romanian providers?

Damn, is that true? Can easily be extracted?

  • jon230jon230 Member

Maybe not too easy, but still possible for an individual.

Aye, it is true. Perhaps not "easily" but certainly doable by someone with experience.

Sorry, I made a typo. That was supposed to be 1984.is. If you didn't like Njalla, you probably won't like 1984. Both groups are spun from a similar string. However, you'd be hard pressed to find something more "free speech" and "bulletproof" than 1984. Their DC has historically been host to a quite impressive roster of notorious web services.

Last time I was in Iceland, I meant to give them a visit but got distracted by other things in Reykjavik.

What do you think about trabia.com? They are located in Moldova.

  • deankdeank Member, Troll

Just host it on Moon and call it a day. Those involved in "free speech" are either nuts or even more nuts.

  • I updated my original list here to include some other options. Note I have no affiliation nor experience with most of these. Please do research beforehand to make sure they're legit.

+1. If you find moon hosting, let me know. I'll buy a box and complain about it every day.

I think spectraip.net looks good, thank you.

Supermicro X9-32G (E5-2620 v2, 32 GB ECC RAM and 480 GB SSD) with Gigabit and 50 TB for 80€.

    May give them a try.
Currently, I use Hetzner, but I don't know for how long that will work.

Even if they suspended the server, it would be no problem, since I do automatic backups and the domain is (((bulletproof))).

  • deankdeank Member, Troll

You got bulletproof.com? Nice, must have cost ya a fortune.

No problem. Happy to help. I think @spectraip is active here, too.

    QuadraNet.

Prices are standard and they've hosted some of the highest profile sites in the past.

Avoid anything in Europe, free speech is way more limited here, even in the most liberal countries.

Added to the list above, thanks.

Those Europeans, with their pesky laws.

But still, if you want a rightwing safe space in the EU, The Netherlands should be no problem. Freedom of speech (as in the freedom to publish what you want on your platform) is in the Dutch constitution. Assuming you don't break any laws you'll be alright.

Here in Spain we have similar guarantees in the constitution and generally speaking you can voice your opinions about anything. But then we have some other laws which in practice restrict certain speech during elections, when talking about the king, protecting the "honorability" of a person, religious beliefs, etc...

So basically anyone can talk about anything and the press can report about anything... as long as certain people or institutions don't get offended, which is not really free speech in the broadest terms.

That's quite literally the antithesis of free speech, hahaha!

Still, overhere a judge will only take your site down if you're inciting violence and such.

I've hosted some fairly offensive stuff with them in the not too distant past without issue. Not necessarily things I agree with or want to host, I just have a tendency to mirror content when a government tries really hard to wipe it from the internet. Rebel with an armchair.

    Same with https://cockbox.org too.

  • cockbox ftw!

If your data matter that much, keep them in your basement and put a dog in front of it...

Is "free speech" always right wing / white supremacist stuff? It seems to be the way it's understood here.
