Game servers that use Hetzner servers do not listed in game server list.

sezingsezing Member, Host Rep

Hi,

We bought 3 servers from Hetzner's auction listing. Installed steam games such as Ark survival and Rust.

Performance is good but none of the game servers we installed on those dedicated servers never shows up in-game server list.

Steam queries work fine we can see server name pings players etc.

Big problem is that people complain that they can't find their servers in-game server listing.

I heard the same problem on game forums too. People mentioned the about same problem with Hetzner.

Anyone has the same experience and knows how to solve this problem?

PS: Hetzner support didn't help.

Did you disable firewall in the control panel? It's enabled by default with no rules. Might be worth to try even though I doubt it would cause problems.

  • Well for ARK they limit the servers to like first 3000, Rust is probably firewall. Make sure you have both Steam and query or disable as above.

Yes, I disabled it but didn't work at all.

  • If it's pinging in Steam then it's probably more to do with the game as it's physically being seen. Are the servers upto date? As in for Rust both the server and oxide if you're running that? Do you use any special characters in the name?

I checked everything I could think of. I have been hosting game servers for almost 4 years. This is not game-related at all because it is same for all game.

I could be missing something but it is not related to installation or game settings.

The only thing I can really suggest is to validate the server files. I'm running an ark server on Hetzner with no issues. What do you use to run them?

Running those games just fine with hetzner. What OS are you running?

I use pterodactyl game panel. Are your servers from hetzner's auction?

I use ubuntu 16.04 hetzner ISO.

  • I run pterodactyl on an AX41-nvme but it wouldn’t matter if it’s auction or not. Why 16.04 by the way? Sure it supports it but it also works with 18.04 or Deb 10 which I use. Are there any errors anywhere?

None. 0 error. Hetzner is our 20% of the total nodes so we have this issue only with hetzner servers.

No specific reason to use 16.04 I just use it. I suspect that auction servers have different network settings.

Only difference would be the network cards. Auctions normally have the realtek cards instead of intel unless you opt for an inic but network itself is the same. It does just sound like it’s a game thing if Steam is pinging back. Are they searching by name or by server join port?

Never had issues with auction servers as well. Maybe try installing ubuntu 18.04/19.04 and see if that changes anything?

Also, maybe try updating the kernel. Had some issues with Minecraft kicking people off the server. Fixed it by upgrading to the latest kernel.

They use the in-game server list to find their servers but can't. If you use steam you can get information from here : http://prntscr.com/s3xrpa

That’s not what I meant I know you can use the steam browser to look for servers but how are they trying to find the server in the ingame browser? By community name, IP?

Since you mentioned pterodactyl make sure all the ports you need are there I’ve not tried myself with Rust but I’ll have a look later to see if there’s an issue. You might also want to join their Discord if you haven’t already.

All ports are open. Yes, I joined. I have been using pterodactyl for almost 2 years and host thousands of game servers. This issue is related to hetzner's server.

if it is, than it's most likely due to something in the image you use. as others suggested you might want to switch to something newer then. I heavily doubt you'll see a difference between regular servers and auction servers. the images and network connection and all that sort of things are the same, as others already mentioned.

I neither play ARK nor Rust, but maybe someone else can check, if for them your server appears in the list after all - just because they have a different location. or you could maybe try yourself by using a VPN?

I've just checked it's working for me. Sort your server list alphabetically it's a long way down but it's there. Even works if you search for it. So it's either on your end or your players? It may of just been a delay of updating. I remember it being fussy if it detected the server as being modded it wouldn't show in community it'd be in modded.

With ARK though it's unlikely it'll show as the devs limited it to 3000 for whatever reason. Sometimes works sometimes doesn't. It's mostly just easier to connect via Steam any who.

Yes, I wait to load all server lists but it won't be listed because I am not in the EU. That's why we never have seen it before.

If you see on the list could you send me screenshot again?

  • @sezing Shouldn't matter as there's no region lock in Rust. The only reason you would is for matchmaking for TF or CSGO usually. I can see servers from all over.

I am admittedly not a technician. However, it sounds like it would be beyond the scope of our support to try to re-create the issue at hand, and because of some of the comments in this thread, I have the impression that the issue may not be on our end. If you have a specific networking question that you want to ask, ie, about different networking cards in different server models, ports or images that might be causing issues, etc., maybe our team can give you some insights if you write a support ticket.
Thanks to those who have been helping to trouble-shoot this issue. I appreciate it! :) --Katie

Wow. People are so brave these days. Did you just want to get DDOSed? Maybe your not aware but there are kiddies around here with booters that tend to boot IPs posted in this forum. I would suggest you remove the IP of your serverr from your post and @DrFallen do the same before you enjoy a bunch of packets making your server unreachable.

    my 2 cents.

    Cheers!
