Dedicated Server with Directadmin

I never had any intention to start on the hosting Business, I am a web developer myself, it all start with few client that want me to hosts and manage their website, fast forward 2 years later. I am managing 200 clients (about $50 / year / client), and it takes its tolls on me.

My client phone me in the middle of the night asking me how to order server / services, how to signup, forgot their login password.

I am currently having servers on various providers, and it becomes more difficult having to keep track, which is which.

Any suggestion to make me not losing my insanity and my social / family live ?

I am considering moving all of them to one dedicated server with directadmin. Is 1 dedicated server enough for 200 client ? any recommended dedicated provider that offer free directadmin ?

  • @Clouvider does solid dedicated servers with free DA.

Depending on your content and websit type, you might not even need a dedi but a decent sized VM would be perfect :)

  • I would suggest a managed VPS - There is a company similar to wiredmouse, but I forgot its name that has reasonable prices. If it doesnt have to be DA, you could also go to 20i.com and get one of their resellers for 40 euros a month. Includes CDN, plus a good WordPress Staging setup - might be the perfect thing to get everyone under 1 service and have a tech support team thats more than 1 person

My clients are exclusively school / educational institution, so it's school website, elearning , scholl databases, and stuff.

And all of them is based on wordpress.

Assuming they are local, any location preference?

  • A dedicated server might be slightly overkill and entirely depends on whether or not you have experience managing servers, if you don't then a managed server could easily eat up most of your income from those. It's probably worth going with a VPS or even a few larger reseller accounts with the same host, but get them split across different servers.

I would second Clouvider, highly recommended also.

Get a Ryzen slice in Vegas baby!

Anything past an 8gb plan is managed and obviously includes Directadmin and Softaculous.

  • School/educational counts as government (at least where I'm from) so it might be worth your sanity to have your own dedicated server as a centralized hosting platform... And if data privacy issues are important, you can also tell your clients that you are hosting in a secured, non-shared environment.

@yokowasis -- where are most your clients? Europe, North America, other?

If your looking for a managed solution definitely go with KnownHost! @jonathanspw

No, it's just a normal website for students. Additional 1 second of loading time is fine.

Well, I do have 2 years of experience. But managing server + managing the software isn't as fun as it used to be.

  • I would strongly suggest, go with KnownHost and sleep well at night or Get yourself a nice dedicated server, spend 40 bucks a month on out sourced support (not a big fan) like this one : https://www.24x7servermanagement.com/directadmin-server-management.html

  • Happy to work with you for a DA server in Singapore if that'd be better for your customers and for you based on timezone differences.

I can't really oursourced support, because mostly they contact me with personal phone number, because well, when I started this, it's what it is. A personal project.

  • @yokowasis the advantage knownhost (or other similar vendors) would give you is that you will have other people available to assist you, should you hit a roadblock or are busy with other things- you can submit a ticket to them for support. So although your clients will contact you- you will always have someone to turn to for help

Thank you all for recommending us, much appreciated!

There’s a dedicated servers sale running here https://www.clouvider.co.uk/dedicated-servers-sale/ we’d love to help you consolidate it all with us, so if you can’t find anything for yourself over there don’t hesitate to get in touch :-)

If it's not too heavy sites, a Reseller @BuyFrancisco or Ramnode might do the trick. Ramnode also got the backup part covered iirc :) You should still do your own, but it's some peace of mind.

KnownHost is also a great pick. A dedi ofc, too. Although if you don't want to manage it, get a managed one :)

i'd recommend knownhost with cpanel. KnownHost support is second to none.

If you get a server with DirectAdmin, support will come from the provider who provides the server and will only cover certain issues and NOT DirectAdmin directly.

  • Since all of your clients are in Indonesia, I suggest you find dedicated server in Indonesia. As I know there is an Indonesian dedicated server provider that offers free DA license.

  • Hosting 200 clients is great for you. You should switch to a VPS or dedicated server

In my own experience I suggest you move out to a VPS or dedicated server instead a shared reseller, because you will have more control over your clients websites and the possibility to scale and obviuslly grow up as company.

I'm a web designer too and have over 1500 clients hosted, The high load/traffic websites are in a managed dedicated with @jonesolutions , they do a great job, I'm working with they since 2-3 years ago, first with a cpanel server and now moved to a directadmin one.

For small websites and medium traffic I used to have a 125GB Cpanel Reseller at BuyVM @Francisco , The last year since they offer free DA on their slices I moved those to 1024 Slices in vegas. Im not a sysadmin but have a basic knowledge about it and can handle with that. To install DA I followed this tutorial by @eva2000 https://www.lowendtalk.com/discussion/159121/guide-to-installing-directadmin-on-centos-7 Until now all is working great with them
