I'm using and participating in OpenNIC.
I like the idea of decentralized, open and free systems. :)

The 1.1.1.1 option is broken apparently, but I wanted to know what are the the most popular ones and already know Cloudflare is among them, so no big deal.

Same to me. Wireguard + Pihole + Unbound + Adguard treat me well.

As mentioned before in a similar thread, 1.1.1.1 lowercases all PTR responses, which makes mtr not as pretty to look at. I won't use them for that reason.

    All others:

Host Loss% Snt Last Avg Best Wrst StDev
    ...

     4. ae10-153.RT1.M9.MSK.RU.retn.net 0.0% 3 41.3 41.5 41.3 41.7 0.0
     5. ae1-4.RT.EVO.AMS.NL.retn.net 0.0% 3 64.2 64.6 64.2 65.0 0.0

    CloudFlare:

     5. ae10-153.rt1.m9.msk.ru.retn.net 0.0% 3 32.1 33.8 31.4 37.9 3.5

Also you missed NTT which I use on some hosts, as I feel the Japanese telecommunications company is about the last entity to want to spy on my browsing etc.

Interesting information about Cloudflare, thank you.

And thanks for reminding me of NTT, I used them for a while and they were very reliable and fast.

  • So can someone confirm, if I self host a mail server (my ISP doesn't do PTR) I can use one of the above to do it instead? I can see how Cloudflare might do it, but not sure about others.

    8.8.8.8 & 8.8.4.4 is where it's at.

Maybe you are mixing up concepts.

    • If you host a mail server, the SMTP server needs to have a valid PTR record to ensure decent reliability, there is no way around that.
    • If your ISP doesn't let you define the PTR, you are out of look. But most VPS and dedicated providers will let you do this.
    • We are talking about recursive DNS in this topic. To host your own PTR records you need an authoritative DNS server and one which support reverse zones, but if you don't have at least a /24 of IPv4, you don't want that.

Fun, yesterday i was checking more informations about 5 eyes, 9 eyes and 14 eyes. Japan was listed as a "more than probably" contributor of 5 eyes.

PTR records can only be set by your ISP. They have nothing to do with this topic. In this case you should consider getting a VPS or use SMTP relay to bypass your ISP’s restrictions.

My own recursor or a mix of 9.9.9.10 or 1.1.1.1

194.109.6.66, 194.109.9.99 and 194.109.104.104. Because I trust my ISP a lot more than faceless data hoarding tech corporations.

On servers I usually go for Quad9 or DNS.WATCH (when the server is in DE).

  • Cloudflare's 1.1.1.1. Working fast for me.
Google's 8.8.8.8 is also fast but I don't want to use them personally.

  • salakissalakis Member

censurfridns.dk is quite sweet - I use that one in NL and Germany.
In Czech Republic I use the nic.cz DNS servers.

Otherwise I'd probably pick 1.1.1.1, I still have mixed feelings about CF, but in terms of performance they're still very impressive.

Seems like you have the kind of ISP one can trust, from the little I know about XS4ALL. Many people in the world aren't that lucky.
