Youtube via squid proxy on VPS super slow

I'm running squid proxy on my VPS but have the problem, that I cannot watch 1080p streams, because there seems to be simply not enough bandwidth, so the video stops all the time, since it has no buffer. The 'connection speed' in the 'stats for nerds' in YT shows 1-2 Mbps max.
The issue is not server speed to google. If I use 'youtube-dl' script, I can download with 50 MBps (Byte!) easily.
Ping to my VPS is ~120ms, I connect to it via IPv4 and according to 'netstat', squid also connects to IPv4 google/YT.

Anyone got experience with running squid proxy? Or had such issues with Youtube?

Thank you

  • Perhaps there is an issue between you and the VPS.
Run tests, mtr, etc and see what might be causing it.

YouTube servers have TCP BBR activated, so downloads with youtube-dl are faster.
Try enabling TCP BBR on your VPS.
