Author needs to redefine his definition of a "startup". :-(

Was just reading that. Given the size it's grown to I'm not sure 30-50 people warrants an article, but that's just me. I'm sure everyone caught in it will find work, can't recall ever running into anyone who wasn't talented at what they did.

Could they just be getting lean to sell? It's pretty common to fake the numbers a bit by getting rid of employees to get a bigger valuation.

DO always had an absolutely massive staff. Years ago they had over 200 people listed on their employee page. Many of those people live in high cost states/cities so their payroll was easily millions per month.

Would be a new development since I left but it sounds plausible.

Startups usually have a 5 - 6 year plan before they want to sell.

I think DO's crossed that recently or will be soon.

Oh I can tell you their IP reputation team has no idea, or had no idea wtf they were doing.
No hard feelings against them at all. Its just the truth.

They've been wanting to sell for years. That's why they killed off everyone's credit a few years back, to lose liability to try and sell the company to the first bidder that they could find.

  • I would like to thank DO. Before DO there is no good thing $5/month, If I recall correctly, Linode stayed there with at least $10. Older than Linode is SliceHost but it is too expensive(maybe $20). At that time I have to sticked with ThePlanet/SoftLayer/FDCserver or BlueHostGator.

I got a feeling DO is about to post something BIG and trying to poke AWS, Google, MS more.

I miss good old hostgator (pre EIG era). Their support was something to adore.

They didn't 'kill off' credits, simply put a time limit on them. The wider and sensible reason for any business to not offer credits that have no time limit on their use is that it has to be listed as a neverending liability on the balance sheet. DO clearly made an error on that as people were not using the credits.

And universally added them back to literally everyone who requested it, a campaign I personally kicked off from my phone while eating in chinatown. That was a fun night.

Yup, I do remember threads on here where you did that for anyone.

Thanks. We all got to start out somewhere.

Has anyone heard of Linode doing anything crazy here lately. That might show something.

    her*

and I agree with you, but at what point is a "startup" no longer a startup? The lines are blurry sometimes.
