Hi
I found dedicated server from 23 euro / month
2 intel xeon E5620 2.40GHz 8 core 16 thread
Ram 16 gb ddr3 ecc
Storage 120 gb ssd
Port 100mbit
My current dedicated is e3 1270v6 with 16gb ram ddr4, 500gb ssd and 1gbit port. I am paying 55.80/ month euro for my current server
My question is
Should I buy and migrate to new dedicated server?
Both servers are from the same provider
Best regards

Is cost the most important factor? Your using a fairly top of the line e3 for an extremely cheap price. The e3 has a passmark of 11000 for all cores and 2300 per core, it's likely a year old. The e5620 is absolutely ancient at this point. It has a passmark of 8000 for all cores and 1080 per core.

    Pros to downgrade;

    Half the cost

    Cons to downgrade:

    Half the speed per core
25% slower all cores in use
    Ddr3 vs 4
Extremely end of life E5620 that should have a higher failure rate
    100mb port
Less disk space,.and likely on a cheap burned out SSD.

Ask yourself why you are asking this question, and you'll find the answer.

  • Funny. I had to deal with the same question yesterday when I had to find some components for a new server.

I debated myself the costs over quality. I mean, I could buy either quality hardware of its latest generation for around 1300 EUR (quadcore) or I could buy a processor that has ‘more cores’ but is ancient. It would cost me around 650 EUR.

I learnt the hard way that more cores don’t necessarily means better. I use some programs that are still using one core a time. Multicore is not possible. So, if you have a 1.8 GHz single core, but I have twenty of them. That means 36 GHz over 4 x 3.5 = 14 GHz. A clear winner, right? No way!

It is rather misleading ESXi calculates the CPU status this way. It’s not all about the total amount. Newer generations are faster as the clock speed is drastically improved, the memory speed is a lot a lot faster. And the single core is also much better. Given I am using a program that could use 3.4 GHz at its load, I’d rather use the new generation.

So, you can’t calc like that. Stick with your current server. It has a great CPU.

  • If you do not have a project that specifically consumes CPU resources, it is indeed a good choice

Here is a better offer at cheaper cost:

    2 x Intel Xeon X5650 CPUs @ 2.66 GHz
    24 Cores (12 Physical + 12 Hyper-Threading)
120 GB SSD or 1 TB SATA
    16 GB RAM
    Gigabit Network Port
    BONUS UnMetered Bandwidth
    IPv4: 1 Usable Address (/30)
    IPv6: /64 Subnet

    +1 to this.

The only difference is that the moment you flick the coin, you'll immediately know where you want it to land.

Haha, it wasn't a plug to get you to switch. Turnkeyinternet does offer very good support as well, but I posted it cause I knew you'll stay with your current server.

It's just to help you understand that if you want cheaper, there is always cheaper, but if you want quality, don't switch to cheaper.
