online.net silently reducing guaranteed bandwidth

Less than a month ago the 29.99 EUR model used to have 300 Mbit/sec: http://web.archive.org/web/20131010082124/http://www.online.net/fr/serveur-dedie/dedibox-classic

And today it's only 150 Mbit/sec: http://www.online.net/fr/serveur-dedie/dedibox-classic

Did they announce this change anywhere? I don't think they did. And the price remains the same. I wonder if this change is applied to all the existing users as well.

  • That's odd.. cause the cheaper dedibox SC still comes with 200Mbit/s

The French are a funny bunch! makes no sense.

  • Hmm, i used to be hitting 200mb/s easily on my dedibox sc, now both my new and old are not going past 100mb/s

AFAIK, they always limit the outbound speed. They're the first provider in EU which I can't get a full downloading speed from home, even OVH can do that. Depending on the tests I've made from different locations, they limit the outbound speed around 2MB/s per connection thread.

  • I have no issues ripping 18 M/s single connection from the cheapest model (10EUR) from the US. Multiple connections I can hit 30+ MB/s.

    Which provider are you using?

Here's my results from a "Serveur Dedibox SC Large", using vsftpd as the ftp server.
All the client side are mixing of Windows and Linux filezilla versions.

    HE Fremont: ~500KB/s (win)

    Seflow: ~2.5MB/s (win)

    OVH BHS: ~2MB/s (nix)

    OVH GRA: ~1.5MB/s (nix)

    i3d NL: ~2.5MB/s (nix)

    O2 Germany(Home): ~1.5MB/s (win)

As a comparison, here's the result from a mKS2G of OVH located in GRA.

    HE Fremont: ~5.5MB/s (win)

    Seflow: ~10MB/s (win)

    OVH BHS: ~10MB/s (nix)

    online.net: ~1.5MB/s (nix)

    i3d NL: ~10MB/s (nix)

    O2 Germany(Home): ~5MB/s (win)

  • That's kinda odd for a provider like them.

OVH is much bigger and has tons of traffic available. online.net is more vulnerable to abusers, they might reduce speeds in order to cope.
Or, they might have had local france peerings and most of their traffic was going through there, now with international opening, the situation is probably changed.

I would not trust FTP/filezilla for accurate results. FTP is horrible. My first test was done out of Softlayer WDC.

I am pulling 4 MB/s single thread from home (Ontario, Canada), with multiple connections it maxes my home connection at around 10+ MB/s.

PS: I am doing this testing from their smallest server. I have not tested on my E3.

Maybe not accurate, but this kind of difference is not just a accurate problem.
You can see the OVH results, it's far ahead of the online.net ones.
I'm really impressed by your home connection quality.

Just like the ftp tests I've made, lower than 2MB/s from home.

  • Well I get 50mb/s from my other server in New Jersey.
    And 70mb/s from i3d

Not hitting much over 100mbit to the US at any point but honestly I don't expect more than 100mbit consistently in US from France. Pretty happy with it all in all though.

Haha, I thought the same thing. It seems the French loves ponies too. It's the default rDNS.

Also, it seems to have finally cleared up as soon as I decide to post about it.
