Dual Xeon E5520 vs Single E3-1230v2 vs Dual Xeon L5420

So I'm in the market for a personal dedicated server that I will be using for development and personal use. I'm interested in doing some transcoding and wondering what would give me the best parallel performance (multiple simultaneous transcodes using PLEX media server)

Which one?

  • E3 1230v2 will give you the best performance for transcoding.

  • e3 would be the best cpu, it has the newest architecture and best performance per cpu core.

  • E3 1230 V2 or V3 will smoke the L series processors. The issue is cost.

    Dual L5xxx mean 8 real cores and E3 have only 4. In a virtual environment the e3 advantage wont be so clear, especially in OVZ when locked cores happen quite often. That being said, E3 is indeed a beast.

    Instead of 2x E5520, go for 2x L5520 as they are exactly the same and L5520 is lower power. L5520 is actually a great little CPU and is still very cheap. For the transcodes you'll want as many physical cores as you can get and the 2x L5520 will give you 8 physical cores and 16 logical.

    At the moment, L5639 CPU's are very cheap on ebay. I would advise using those instead. They can be found for around £45, and give you six cores each at 2.13 and their dual benchmark beats the E3:

    The are not exactly the same. The power envelope is different and hence speed will be different.

    That is why I said the power is different. Same cores/threads, cache and clock frequency.

    If you don't need the two extra cores of the L5639, you can also look into the L5630, which has similar performance to the L5520, but at a lower TDP.

    E3 is the clear winner, but I'd take dual L5420s over dual E5520s. Despite the slight edge in the benchmark, the dual L5420s consume significantly less power than dual E5520s.

  • Yeah pure cpu power is imporant for transcoding i am sure but if he wants to use it for other thangs and needs big ram the e3 will not last very long thats what i have to add.

    Of those two servers, up the E3 to 16GB or 32GB and you're better off.

    It's depending on the usage.

    E3 have 4 core / 8 thread, but dual E5520 have 8 core / 16 thread, and E5520 can use more memory.

    But, E3-1230 have a higher frequency, and it's a newer design.

    If you want to use application with high cpu usage use E3, but if you want to run much of application (like virtualization) the double thread is better.
