Cheap NAT VPS in or with good connectivity to South America?

Hi LET

I'm looking for a super cheap VPS with good connectivity to South America.

There are decent offers in Miami, but as I don't need a dedicated IPv4 I'd rather settle for a NAT VPS if one was available, to cut down on cost. Something in the US but with decent latency to South America would work for me, of course a LES box in SA itself would be even better.

There are a lot of great options in Asia and Oceania but it seems that there is no NAT box either in Miami or in South America. Did I miss an offer somewhere?

If that's not the case and South America is a Blank Spots on the NAT Map, @mikho @AnthonySmith @gestiondbi : do you have any projects to open something in South America or in the US but with a link as direct as possible to South America?

Thanks!

For me personally, my plans are another location in the US, most likely Los Angeles or somewhere close.

Another is Africa, then perhaps South America as I yet haven’t found a suitable location.

NAT boxes in Miami and Dallas will be great.

Our NAT VPSs in Tampa have pretty good connectivity to South America.

EDIT: Here's a direct link to them https://securedragon.net/clients/cart.php?gid=51

    Nice, thanks!

I'll probably end up experimenting with it, but latency to Brazil and Argentina is often 20/25ms higher than Vultr Miami. For example, traceroute from Argentina: Drgn / Vultr.

To some places it's better (great routes to Chile!) but on some it's worse, you can for example check with 177.85.163.73 (traceroute below).

traceroute to 177.85.163.73 (177.85.163.73), 30 hops max, 60 byte packets
     1 199.167.29.90 (199.167.29.90) 0.057 ms 0.014 ms 0.012 ms
     2 23-111-171-221.static.hvvc.us (23.111.171.221) 0.293 ms 0.273 ms 0.250 ms
     3 10.254.0.0 (10.254.0.0) 0.676 ms 0.654 ms 0.626 ms
     4 10ge2-14.core1.tpa1.he.net (216.66.0.213) 63.789 ms 63.751 ms 63.923 ms
     5 100ge12-1.core1.mia1.he.net (184.105.64.93) 64.595 ms 64.606 ms 64.656 ms
     6 10ge14-1.core2.sao1.he.net (184.105.81.234) 185.742 ms 173.128 ms 173.155 ms
     7 73.cl9.com.br (177.85.163.73) 174.034 ms 174.073 ms 174.033 ms

Do you think this will get better in the future?

    Sounds nice!

Since Tampa routes through Miami I don't think the latency will ever be better than a VPS hosted in Miami. If the 25ms matters then go with Vultr for $25 more.

  • For peanuts per year, what's a few ms going to matter. If you work out the $/month/ms it's going to be cheaper this way. If you require lower latency, you may be required to increase your budget.

Hivelocity used to be really good for South America but its performance decreased lately. Not so premium for us anymore.

@dahartigan @KuJoe You're right. And the difference is totally acceptable, but this reduces the advantage of Florida vs other locations.

That being said, I didn't test all locations in South America, and Secure Dragon is a good 20 ms faster to Chile than Vultr in many cases and faster to some places in Argentina as well. The latency difference isn't only caused by the Tampa/Miami link, even if there is sometimes a problem there, as can be seen in the traceroute I posted earlier.

We do not offer LES VPS in Miami, and do not have any plans to offer this location.

I would recommend to check @KuJoe plans.

Imok, Can you describe what you are seeing as far as any performance degradation to S. America goes? I would love to hear what you see so I can take it to the Network Engineers. As far as I know we have only added more carriers and use performance based routing which theoretically should only result in performance improvements. But you are seeing otherwise so let me have someone take a look.

Ended up going with @vapornode and I'd like to recommend them: great VPS, very fast and stable. (They have no cheap NAT VPS offers, but if you're broke and patient, they have great deals from time to time, and their normal pricing seems to be decent for what they offer as they have a pretty neat setup.)

I did some testing and @Hivelocity's network seems really good to North/South America as well as EU. I've encountered no issues or weird routes such as the stuff I mentioned earlier. Congrats!
