how to use vps as backup server
ima complete noob
got one 512mb RAM slice and block storage 256gb from buyvm
installed ubuntu
logged in
checked for disks by fdisk -l
/dev/sda was showing 256gb
used winscp and backed up some files in it
after some hours
thought to back some more files
opened winscp /dev/sda no such file or directory
fdisk -l
Disk /dev/vda: 10 GiB, 10737418240 bytes, 20971520 sectors
Units: sectors of 1 * 512 = 512 bytes
Sector size (logical/physical): 512 bytes / 512 bytes
I/O size (minimum/optimal): 512 bytes / 512 bytes
Disklabel type: dos
Disk identifier: 0xbecf8286
Device Boot Start End Sectors Size Id Type
/dev/vda1 * 2048 19920511 19918464 9.5G 83 Linux
/dev/vda2 19920512 20969087 1048576 512M 82 Linux swap / Solaris
I was like wtf where is /dev/sda
so out of curiosity just reattached the storage and attached it again to the node
logged in via putty
partprobe
fdisk -l
Disk /dev/vda: 10 GiB, 10737418240 bytes, 20971520 sectors
Units: sectors of 1 * 512 = 512 bytes

but there is no /dev/sda shown in winscp and where are my files
note: these files are still with me on my local machine
can anybody help me how to use vps as backup server

Won;t you need to format and mount /dev/sda somewhere before loading data to it?
so I'm a noob in this unix shit
can you guide me how to do that or any stackexchange/superuser links ?
https://docs.bytemark.co.uk/article/adding-new-discs/
Obviously you won't need the bit about adding the disk in the panel, but from step 3 under the Linux steps should work for you.
thanks man ! really helped a lot
Next time you should ask in a forum
what is this then >?
looks like a question mark ?
Read it again and you could say it's a greater than sign.
A bigger question?
When your subject doesn't have question mark, it looks like you're providing the instructions.
So when people click on it and find out you don't have a clue and asking for help, you're getting the wrong audience and we're annoyed.
such greentext, much wow
that's understandable but since you come from reddit you should how to markdown terminal output at least to make more readable to other who comes here searching for similar problem .
Do they use terminals at reddit?

Quality of Reddit never ceases to amaze me. It's a good thing I rarely visit or I'd have pulled all of my hair by now.
I joined for like 4 hrs just for fun one time.
They deleted my comments critical of shitstemd and the NSA.
Ok, thx, bye.

Yeah I visit every nanosecond
Unfortunately I have no pics.
I didn't care that much.
But it's the truth.
I'm only guessing multi quoting is not yet a thing at Reddit?
it is but a lil weird
Wait, what? I can see some one saying that on Reddit about LET.
Reddit was where I found the registry change to prevent Windows 10 from rebooting despite disabling it through all the supposed controls. For that alone, I'll defend them. Oh, and I generally find they help before shitting on an OP, vs LET where people routinely get shit on for asking questions.
Wait what, what?
To be fair couple people on LET doing this , even so they doing it because the feel board from hearing same complains/issues over years ,
I know many guru users here on such position they do all trolls on me and on the other , to encourage them to look harder , personally I don't feel offended at all I just ignore it and focus on the other replies , it's not hard to do that .
Without some trolling here and there this forum would be even more dead.
