However, they are offering a 50% discounted rate for a period of two years.

  • I switched to UptimeRobot a while back. They only check every 5 minutes instead of every minute, but you get 50 monitors for free, and can create a public status page (eg. mine is https://uptime.dan.cx/)

  • €12.95 every month to ping a server... hmmmmmm... nah.
    Status: trying Freshping.
Future plans: search software to host my own ping automated checker.

I think Statuscake has unlimited free 5 minute monitors with public page.

Edit: Nevermind, they have removed it since I last used them. Now it's limited to 10 monitors with 15 minute interval. Sad.

I think you get to ping more than one server :P

You could all write your own software and then pay to host it on a VPS from someone here if you'd like. I say good for them. They need to make a profit somehow.

  • I use Hattrixlulz

  • I'm a happy nodeping user - ain't free, but 200 monitors for $15/month with unlimited SMS - it's really hard not to like that - and it's super rock solid.

Also happy with UptimeRobot. I've recently started using their web hook notifications to change DNS settings based on up/down status.

I didn't even think of that! That's a pretty clever idea (assuming a low enough TTL for the domain).

  • Daniel15 said: assuming a low enough TTL for the domain

Yes, you do need a reasonable TTL for the record, maybe not the whole domain. It is certainly a poor man's solution (with 5 minute monitoring). You can get more creative, for example I have a Vultr snapshot and if there is an outage, I use an Uptime Robot web hook, spin up a Vultr VPS from the snapshot via API, and redirect the DNS record to that. I find the main advantage of using Uptime Robot for this is the monitoring from multiple sites, i.e. if I just used ping then I'd get too many false positives.

    Just Night-Sky it.

  • They must have been hosting on HiFormance. With them bust there is no more $10/y servers to be had. 2019 is a sad year

  • Why no one mention smokeping? You can set ping interval as you wish and, relay with sendgrid for email alerts

    The end is nigh!

  • I'm also using UptimeRobot nowadays

  • There is also UptimeDoctor with one minute interval on the free plan (http://www.uptimedoctor.com/en/pricing.php).

I basically stopped using Pingdom ever since they start restricting their free plans...

  • You can also try https://pingniner.com/app/ it is free while in beta

Hetrix tools and freshworks (freshping.io) both offer free 1 minute monitoring for a few sites.

  • Freshworks looks good except spilling out shit on pingdom. Not very ethical, but hey, it's businezzzz

They say 5 minutes, but in practice, when I was signed up for a few services with 1 and 3 minute monitors, Uptime Robot still had the best response times. I'd see checks that were definitely under a minute. I always assumed they were just committing themselves to 5, but if they got the resources, they do 1 minute or less.

Plus, 50! Glad I went with them.
