Linux - GUI - OpenVZ

Hello, got one of the openvz in the recent Virmach BF sale. Has 4GB ram.

I am trying to see if I can setup a desktop on that openvz box for my browsing needs... I understand there is always Windows, but, I want to explore Linux Desktop.

Any suggestions of some light weight GUI which I can put on that openvz container? And what will be the best way to connect to it? I have heard VNC is the quickest, but, its not secure, plus, I remember seeing the lag while the screen refreshes.

Any help appreciated.

PS: I am thinking of centos. but open to other alternatives too.

Thnx,

  • Xfce/TigerVNC.

You can also try xrdp, I found that it performs better than VNC most of the time.

XFCE is more optimized for VNC as compared with GNOME.

  • Xfce is lightweight while GNOME is a bloated pile of crap imho.

  • XFCE with NoMachine is my pick.

It looks okay on normal desktop but wouldnt recommend it for remote machine. A desktop window manager is usually bloated by design.

By the way, X11 forwarding might be a choice too depending on your use cases.

    GNOME surely is.
With others I am not that sure.

  • Desktop on a vz.. shit.. I never thought that would work for some reason.

Try running KVM Virtualisation on OpenVZ, it should work fine too (Other than violating AUP and poor performance) so you can even run Windows on it

Lol.. that would be a good one to try on one of those shit hosts we can't mention on LET

Or I could use it to run freedos and relive my childhood

My experience with x2go was Great as i had 2mb and internet connection with high ping

But settings up VNC is easier setting up and noVnc really makes it a definite choice

  • Memory using:

    LXDE ~ 100M+
    MATE ~ 200M+
    XFCE4 ~ 300M+

Wrong question. You should install X-server on your own desktop and then run any X-app on that VPS, while redirecting X-protocol to your X-terminal.

    < 0.2MB

  • 4.7 bytes.

Why would you browse on a VPS? Genuinely curious

So the browser malware from browsing porn stays in his vps not on his computer

If that is accurate then wow!

What do you expect from a guy whose first thread on LET is "What is the most important thing you have learnt from life?"?
