HK VPS or Low End Dedi

edited November 2018 in Requests

I am looking for HK VPS or Low End Dedi. I want it to have SSD storage. It needs to be KVM, if its a VPS. I will need some sort of DDOS protection that isn't Cloudflare. Currently using Cloudflare and my Asian users (especially China) are complaining that Cloudflare sucks for them. Contacted Cloudflare and they said I will need to get a 500$+ per month Enterprise account to have any sort of access to their China POPs. Am I able to get both DDOS protection and an Optimized route to China? My site currently uses only 500GB-700GB of bandwidth per month. I want to have at least 1TB of bandwidth available. Budget of around 100$ per month. I know China bandwidth is crazy expensive. Is my budget realistic?

4GB-8GB of Ram

Honestly $500 /month for protection that is China optimised is dirt cheap. Asian protection in general is expensive. Add in China optimised protection and then it cost a small fortune. $100 /month is barely enough to cover the cost of an unprotected China optimised VPS. If you want protection, the cost will be many many multiples greater.

To put this into context, CN2 bandwidth cost over US$100 /mbit. 1TB traffic = >3Mbit if hammered 24/7. So the bandwidth without protection is already $300 /month.

Okay you can get bandwidth from PCCW, NTT or HGC with cheaper 'guaranteed' routes to China. Best prices I've seen are around $65/Mbit, but even if you assume $50, that's still $150 /month just for clean traffic. And you won't get massive burst capability either at that price. You can't really oversell China traffic since anyone buying it is probably going to use most of it.

If you buy CN2 directly, they will provide 'free' protection, upto around 3GBit/s. Which is useful for the very small attacks, but nothing for the majority of the larger attacks.

Best case scenario I see is you find a provider who has a direct CN2 connection and has the 3Gbit free protection. Then it would cost you around $400 /month.

But if you need proper protection, like 100Gbit, then you're looking at about $4,000+. So $500 seems pretty cheap.

  • OK, So it seems I need to host outside of Asia then if I want a decent amount of bandwidth with DDOS protection. Is there hosts in like Eastern Europe or Russia with above average China connectivity? Where would be the best location for China users while having DDOS protection and not costing a fortune. Maybe I can do 150$ per month. But 500$ or more is simply out of the question. Thanks randvegeta for your insights. I knew China/HK bandwidth was way overpriced, but I guess I still really underestimated it.

  • You can try https://www.kdatacenter.com/ddos-protection (pretty good connection to china)

  • Did you consider Alicloud? It could be a good option but I don't know much about their services but specs doesn't look bad either.

If you read the fine print, you notice that you only get 5mbps CN2.
