  • Depends on what you need.. I use a combination of VMs from different providers in different locations. I have one for Plex, one for nextCloud, a few storage VPS, a few other application servers (sickrage, transmission, etc) - a mix of VZ and KVM depending on requirements.

Tbh they just idle. I do development here and there but quite rarely these days. It ends up being pretty costly when you have a lot of idle servers. We should do a poll for how much people waste on idle servers. :P

Curious what provider you use for plex ? I want one too but can't find good storage deals. Do you use VPS storage for Plex or is there an alternative ?

Also +1 for the mostly idling one.

An unspoken rule of LET, if you haven't got at least 2 idle nodes, you are a heretic.

  • I got only one idle at the moment but I plan to stack up.

I can't mention the name of the provider as they are taboo on LET but I have a KVM from them I use as the plex server and then use multiple smaller openvz storage vps along with sshfs to mount the storage.

Just gotta be mindful of others on the server and not transcode and use plex only for direct play.

Haha, happy to help! Heimdall would suffice in putting all of these services in a nice home brew dashboard.

Forgot to include the services running at my homeserver: Sonarr, Radarr, Bazarr, Lidarr, Ampache, SABnzbd, Transmission, Gitea & Plex. And I have Spotweb running as well.

/r/selfhosted - if you're looking for shit to run

/r/homelab - if you're interested in staring at piles of idling gear

Yes, misguided individuals seem to still indulge in the unholy practice of putin perfectly idling servers to questionable use.
    Disgusting.
