LET - bug reports, improvements and feature requests.

edited August 22 in Announcements

Hi folks,

Now the forum is on a more stable back end that can be updated and altered without falling apart it would be good to start one of these feedback threads again that can actually be acted upon this time.

It seems pointless digging up the old one as it is years out of date.

Please try and structure your feedback in a meaningful way when possible to make it clear.

Example.

Feature: Add a dislike button.

Reason: To show up generally bad quality posts and posters.

Bug report: when I click edit post within 30 seconds I get a 503 error.

Steps to reproduce: reply to a post then immediately click edit.

Improvements: add the thanks button to the mobile view.

Reason: it would be good to be able to thank posts on mobile.

Thank posts to indicate your support for that said bug, feature request or improvement.

Keep in mind this is from a technical perspective only.

Bullshit and troll posts will be removed and this will be heavily moderated to keep it clear for the people actually doing the implementation.

Improvement: add "My Bookmarks" button to mobile view.

Reason: Currently I couldn't find it from mobile view Profile page, need to "Go to Full Site" every time...

Admin edit: Done. You can find a link to this on the top left of your user profile.

  • Bug report: All email notifications are now sent in my spam folder. I'm using Fastmail and here's part of SpamAssassin in the header:

    X-Spam-hits: BAYES_00 -1.9, ME_BETA_RULES 0.01, ME_CMSPAM_100 4, ME_WPORN 3,

      LANGUAGES ende, BAYES_USED user, SA_VERSION 3.4.0

  • Feature: Please rewrite the email notification subject so that all emails pertaining to the same thread have the same subject line, something like:

Before: [LowEndTalk] AnthonySmith commented on LET - bug reports, improvements and feature requests.

After: [LowEndTalk] New comment on LET - bug reports, improvements and feature requests.

The reason being so that it'll be grouped into a single thread by most email clients.

Would be nice if E-Mail notifications have included full message content, as they had in 2011 or so, and as I've been asking to bring back since 2013 or so.

Bug report: Emails getting rejected from let when using Exim mail server if its configured to do sender verification with error sender verify fail, root cause is the two MX record returned mail1b.lowendbox.com mail1a.lowendbox.com don't have a A record.

The fix you could update the MX to hostname that got A records or you could just remove the mx records as most mail server including Postfix when doing sender verification will happily accept a domain without Mx as long as it got a A record.

2018-08-22 10:02:50 H=butterfly.apple.relay.mailchannels.net [23.83.208.27] sender verify fail for [email protected]: all relevant MX records point to non-existent hosts
    2018-08-22 10:02:50 H=butterfly.apple.relay.mailchannels.net [23.83.208.27] X=TLS1.2:ECDHE_RSA_AES_256_GCM_SHA384:256 CV=no [email protected] rejected RCPT : Sender verify failed

    Feature: Ability to schedule posts

Rationale: Would help members and providers alike to be able to have their thread go live at a specified date and time of their choosing

Seems to already be a plug-in available here (version compatibility unknown):

  • Rollback(?): Not a fan of the new way threads are merged - a little confusing. Don't know if this is a setting that can be changed easily?

Improvements: Change the "thanks" button to "like" button.

Reason: a wider meaning for positive reactions. Also I think it's used in that way currently.

This would really be a good improvement. And yeah, it seems that most people use it as a 'like' button rather than as a 'thanks' button anyway.

    • the search function is crap, slow, misses stuff, no options to filter or organize results

    • cloudflare captcha on the support desk blocks posting even after user is logged in. sometimes it prevents logins here.

    • But do we as volunteers really want to do a lot of unpaid dev work on this site, given that we're already sharecroppers for CC and its new owner even by just posting?

  • deankdeank Member

Search function sucks in almost all forum script.

    Use google for forum searches.

google isn't that big an improvement (can't search for threads with particular title or date range etc). Also we block some categories from google search and if it were up to me we'd do that more. Forum search varies, but lots of them are far better than this, or we could conceivably connect up a specialized search backend using Solr/Elastic/whatever. It's not that big a dev effort (I've done it before) but again it would feel like sharecropping.

The only forum search that I felt it was adequate enough was from Xeonforo.

All else sucked. At one point, I just stopped using search function all together.

That was when I felt the end was coming. it was a message from Gods.

vbb search is far better than what we have here, though whether it's "adequate" is of course still up to the beholder. I don't remember trying xenforo search but I remember not liking xenforo in general. Anyway as bad as the search on this site is feature-wise, it would be much more usable if it weren't so slow.

i have recently change my email adress here and was not asking me for password, so i think will be more secure if when one is change the details ask for password because if someone is log in in some public place and forgott to sing out the account its easy to change his email with a new one and use the account

Since we are in the business of suggesting features, another request would be a way to sort the threads where new threads (since a user has last logged in) will be isolated/sorted on top of the other older threads.

I was about to suggest putting a "dismiss" feature to regular threads so they would sink further per user (just like the "Mute" feature in Discourse), but I'm not sure if it'll be too complicated for Vanilla.

Actually, where do we find threads that we dismissed? I did that for the 2018 provider poll results, and now it's not listed even when going directly to https://www.lowendtalk.com/categories/announcements Nevermind, it was in General, not Announcements.

  • Url's won't open in a new tab anymore if you just click on them? I always use the the html a tag with target="_blank" attribute because I like having it default open in a new tab but I've noticed that it doesn't work anymore in my posts

Now that we have "Liking", there isn't a way to "Unlike"?

If I remember correctly, there was a way to "Un-thank"?

I'm sure that won't be too hard for them to fix. I guess we've all got to have a little patience. :/

Sometimes it refreshes, sometimes it just goes away until you refresh. This is something that broke after updating to the latest Vanilla. We are looking into it.

Not sure if it's happening only to me, but selecting text outside a thread will still show the little "quote" button, clicking just goes to the comment field

seems to be fixed now. thanks to the devs, reloading was quite annoying tbh.

PS: the unthank only appears after a reload though, but I sure as hell can live with that ;-)

Another useful feature would be the ability to forward and quote from private messages that one has sent or received, similar to how one can forward email. One can copy and paste but it's often less than ideal.
