Personally, I can't be bothered to use anything but vi. It's the same across distros, and already installed when I get there. Just as versatile as the "fancier" editors, too, once you learn to use it.

  • "vi" or "nano", It depends if I require the search function.

  • I like nano for its simplicity. When on Windows I like to use Notepad++ :)

    Coda

But for quick edits i use nano, I can't be bothered with vi and typing all the commands.

  • Nano ftw.

  • I like nano. Just about anyone could use it.

  • @Kuro Ditto. Nano on the CLI, Notepad++ on Windows. Never bothered with anything else, both do what I need sufficiently.

  • Vim only. How can you use anything except it on linux boxes? Especially emacs and nano, ugh.

    vim
(pure vi miss some useful features, but it's ok for me as fallback)

pico (nano) at first, but then I needed something better so I switched to emacs.

Since I couldn't be bothered to install emacs every time as it's never there by default, now I'm just using vim.

Your forgetting that the most successful commercial Desktop UNIX OS is based upon BSD, and that BSD is used on nearly 40% of smartphones.

Also that a BSD Derivative has more market share in the desktop market then Linux.

I must add that I use openbsd for a lot of firewalls and balancers out there (pf and relayd rules!)

  • nano and notepad++.

tell me i'm not the only one who can't/don't bother to understand vim.

  • So is it only me who uses joe ?

  • nano only

  • @OneTwo there is really not much to understand if you want to use basic editing functions. The only thing you have to learn is to how to switch between command and insert mode and :help

  • InfinityInfinity Member, Host Rep

I'm a nano guy too, on winblows I use notepad++.

  • nano on the command line, Kate in the GUI.

  • nano FTW! I even use it under Windows via cygwin. Can't beat it for a quick edit.

Outside of the CLI, it's SciTE. Now that is an amazing text editior.

  • vim or gedit.
