What is the total size of all the world's web hosting companies storage's?
I think it is about 5 to 10 petabytes.
I know it is hard to estimate but maybe some people give us approximate values.

  • I'm not going to lie, it's a lot - most likely at least 7GB

  • 1 million 7

  • 7MB

  • 5 - 10 PB? Lol Backblaze alone has 400PB+ I would say we are at least into Exabytes. If not Zettabyte or even Yottabytes

  • Provided many hosts provide infinite hosting, I'd say infinite²

  • come on guys, be realistic, everything runs on PiedPiper compression algorithm. It is 7 bytes.

According to wikipedia (about harddrive production):

Shipments in 2016 estimated at about 424 million units

Times a low-end value of 500gb per disk would put the total production of hdds in 2016 on 200000 pb. Estimate that about 10% of that would go to datacenters, your estimate is WAY low, especially since hdds are in use for multiple years, and servers tend to use more hdds than consumer gear.

Good one, though lets add some maths ey to make it interesting! Approx, the capacity of a floppy is 1.44Mb or so (give or take).

That would equal about 711 floppy's per Gb.

    1 Petabyte = 1,000,000 Gb

    1 Pb is 711,000,000 floppies.

So based on the assumption of the OP (5Pb for arguments sake)...

    (1000000 * 711) * 5...

A grand total of 3,555,000,000 Floppy disks!

Though we all know the answer to life, the universe and everything is actually 42.

they do have 600 Petabytes stored now. I personally do think around 1 Zettabyte, if the Backblaze has 600 Petabytes, what about Amazon and other big players like Microsoft and Google.

P.S. AWS Snowmobile = 100PB, how many snowmobiles at Amazon?

  • BlaZeBlaZe Member, Host Rep
  • wait.. counting sheep now.

  • Ok, so backblaze are growing at approximately 100PB every 4 months...
    400PB - Oct 2017
    500PB - Feb 2018
    600PB - July 2018

Soooo AWS, Facebook, Instagram, Azure, Google, etc are going to be growing faster...

I would say... 35ZB should just about cover the whole internet.

  • Probably a high percentage is owned by a few companies. Share the storage bois.

20% companies holding 80% of total storage I reckon
