Oh wow.... I'm only a hop away from them... If I opted for fibre service in my house (but no difference in speed...), this would be at 1ms!

    Tracing route to 1dot1dot1dot1.cloudflare-dns.com [1.1.1.1]
over a maximum of 30 hops:

      1 <1 ms <1 ms <1 ms 192.168.1.1
      2 4 ms 4 ms 4 ms 1dot1dot1dot1.cloudflare-dns.com [1.1.1.1]

    Trace complete.

Funny that it doesn't pass my provider's internal routing with a internal IP address, wonder if they set themselves up a PoP at my provider.

Some piece of junk equipment your provider uses decided to use 1.1.1.1 for internal purposes. What modem do you have?

    Known troublemakers:

    • Pace 5268
    • Calix GigaCenter
    • Various Cisco Wifi access points
    • D-Link DMG-6661

Hmm... if Cloudflare dns is up, can't seem to get a lookup response from 1.1.1.1 for google.com. The wifi router I use is self purchased, so it shouldn't be the issue, but the modem is supplied by my provider, Telus. They gave me a Actiontec T1200H.

It's pretty clear one of the devices in your path thinks it should be responding to 1.1.1.1. What happens if you
try 1.0.0.1 (the secondary Cloudflare DNS IP)?

Seems to be fine to 1.0.0.1:

    tracert 1.0.0.1

    Tracing route to 1dot1dot1dot1.cloudflare-dns.com [1.0.0.1]
over a maximum of 30 hops:

      1 <1 ms <1 ms <1 ms 192.168.1.1
      2 5 ms 4 ms 4 ms 10.29.174.1
      3 8 ms 7 ms 7 ms 154.11.12.201
      4 8 ms 7 ms 8 ms six.as13335.com [206.81.81.10]
      5 8 ms 8 ms 8 ms 1dot1dot1dot1.cloudflare-dns.com [1.0.0.1]

    Trace complete.

    nslookup google.com 1.0.0.1
    Server: 1dot1dot1dot1.cloudflare-dns.com
    Address: 1.0.0.1

    Non-authoritative answer:
    Name: google.com
    Addresses:  2607:f8b0:400a:800::200e
              216.58.216.174

If it's 4ms to get a reply from 1.1.1.1, it must be my ISP replying, not sure why they would do that...

I wonder what announcing an IP block would cost.

Well I use 1.1.1.0/24 for testing internally (internal testing range of 1.1.0.0/16)... It may be bad practice, but it's probably pretty common.

  • I always thought 1.1.1.1 was disused because of incorrectly configured services / debug / dev things that just cause a bunch of noise and malformed traffic to this. Maybe I'm thinking of another IP.

Right, they mentioned this - it's true, but they are absorbing the BS in exchanging for using those IPs.

Been using the CloudFlare public DNS for two days now and it's good! Feels faster than Google DNS, but who really knows.

1.2.3.4 is likely worse for testing traffic
