Selling Dedicated Servers

edited March 2018 in General

We run a web design business and have a few Dell R410's that we are looking to sell (the hardware itself). We have no clue where to advertise these apart from on eBay (pain in the backside as they take a load of fees). UK based.

Anyone know anyone who would be looking to facilitate preferably a quick purchase?

Dell R410 x 3
2 of which have dual PSU's and one has a single PSU
64GB DDR3 RAM (8GB RAM sticks) total
8 x SAS 15k 450GB (Hitachi)
6 x 2TB SAS Dell Hitachi
4 x 2TB Hitachi SAS
CPU's in all servers are Dual x E5640 (8 cores per server).

May I suggest you to include the specs (e.g. cpu, memory, disks, psu, etc) and an expected price on your post?

It may help you to find some offers.

Sorry, I thought advertising wasn't allowed in here. Will amend now.

I may be wrong but I haven't seen anything on the rules regarding advertising. Maybe if you post in the Offtopic category it would be less likely to infringe any rules.

Can you change categories or ask a mod to move it to Offtopic?

Are you selling spare hdd's? AFAIK the R410 only have 4 bays and you listed 18 hdd's for 3 servers.

Just to clarify what you are offering:

    Dell R410 (2 units)
    2 x E5640 (2 x 4 cores)
    64GB DDR3 RAM (8GB RAM sticks)
    2 x 450GB SAS 15k (Hitachi)
    2 x 2TB SAS Dell Hitachi
    2 x 2TB SAS Hitachi
    2 x PSU (size? W)
    Dual NIC (?)
    iDRAC enterprise(?)
    Price £?/each

    Dell R410 (1 unit)
    2 x E5640 (2 x 4 cores)
    64GB DDR3 RAM (8GB RAM sticks)
    4 x 450GB SAS 15k (Hitachi)
    2 x 2TB SAS Dell Hitachi
    1 x PSU (size? W)
    Dual NIC (?)
    iDRAC enterprise(?)
    Price £?

Correct, this is our total inventory (including spare drives and RAM).

What price are you looking for? Also where in the UK are you based?

The servers are located near Birmingham at the moment and what would you offer? Around £1k for the lot would be fine but very open to offers.

  • hexukhexuk Member

Would reduce down to £800 - apparently, the £1k is quite high.

    Do you ship to Portugal?

Looking for one though with or without disks.

Guess I could do but you would need to arrange a courier.

I think you’d be looking more at £650-700 for the whole lot personally.

    Is that an offer?

I think I could offer you about that. I happen to be in the UK now, but I still need a way to transport it to Lithuania. Shame I didn't drive....

    Three letters for you ;-).

    DHL
    DPD
    UPS

    Pick any combination ;-)

P4D is a good aggregator with own ‘courier business’, Parcel2go is also great

Probably kind of expensive to ship, which would then make it not worth while. But I can call to get a quote I guess.

Use aggregator like P4D or Parcel2go - they will give you much better prices.

You can just ship a pallet and be done with it ;-).

  • I'm surprised that the value of this stuff is so low. Is it because of the power bills? This stuff isn't that much lower performance than current i7/E3 stuff.

    According to PassMark, Xeon E5640 (80W, 4c8t) is roughly equivalent to i3-7300T (35W, 2c4t).

If we were to compare it only to modern server stuff, the E3-1235L v5 is just slightly better, but at 25W TDP.

Power consumption and single thread performance are main reasons.

These are dual cpu machines, so total speed is near an i7 4-core. Power consumption is terrible of course, and true about the single thread performance.

It's largely the power. If you imagine a typical modern E3 server will use around 60-100 watts, then these E5640s would use at least double. In the UK, where electricity is what? US$0.16? That translates to around $17 /month more in power AT BEST. Once you include efficiency losses of the UPS, and cooling costs, that figure can be double (at least in the summer). But assuming you have very efficient cooling and redundant power, the extra $17 /month makes a big difference at the lower end of the market (LET pricing).

Of course if power is cheaper, and you have less need for active cooling, then it may still be worth while to run. Also, since they come with 64GB RAM, it's still a lot cheaper than an equivalent modern E3. So it's not completely useless.

But you must bare in mind that if you consider the life span of a comparable E3 to be 5 years? That $17 /month adds up to over $1,000, so over the long term, the new stuff is still more cost effective than old stuff. As such, the value cannot be so high.

  • Well that assumes all the cpus are running 24/7/365, which is probably the safest assumption for a vps or dedi host, but if someone wants a server for their own use they might have lower average power. Other than that your numbers look reasonable. I'm used to the guideline that 1W of power = $1/year which comes to around $0.11/kWh. But there will be a multiplier factor for being in a data center.
