Affordable VPS for lightweight continuous integration?

Hi, I'm looking for an affordable VPS for lightweight continuous integration.

Budget : < $10

Desired spec:

  • CPU: Moderately powerful, but the more, the better
  • Ram: At least 2GB
  • Disk: At least 20GB
  • Network speed: Ideally 1Gbps or more since time to time it requires to download few GBs of docker images as a part of test
  • Location: Anywhere

I did some research and it seems like Hetzner, Ssdnodes, Netcups are good options, but would love to know if there are other good options and also which will be better than the others.

Thanks in advance

Comments

  • I use netcup VPS500 and OVH sandbox S1-4 for Gitlab CI. Both are working ok, i have the feeling OVH is little bit faster in disk speed.

  • Digital Ocean now has per-second billing instead of hourly, nice if you want to spin up servers only briefly.

  • What the fuck is lightweight continuous integration?

Is this a new version of continuous integration that all the DevOps shithouses will be bugging me about next week?

I just thought OP meant CI that was not being used too heavily. Like a 1-developer hobby repo doing occasional evening or weekend builds, as opposed to a company with 50 developers pushing changes all day long.

That’s a relief. Seems like there some new devops h0tn355 every other day.

That's pretty cool. Currently we are using Github Webhook + Drone CI. So to do that, I guess there should be an always running webhook-listening server, and it should spin up a new VPS on a webhook callback. Not impossible but quite a bit of work I guess.

Though still really sexy. I can even scale VMs depending on the workload.

Lol yes that's what I meant. Not hobby, but only 3 devs, so it will run very occasionally. Still the faster the better as devs can check the result quickly.

vmhaus seems to be popular around here. Their 2GB /2 vCpu / $7 plan has 1 Gbps connection.

One remark: Hetzner's spinups are ridiculously fast, DO's are noticably slower. You could try both. Hetzner has a 1 hour minimum billing increment that could cast a few extra pennies here and there. That could conceivably add up if you use a lot of short-lived servers. It would take quite a few though. Hetzner's cross-Atlantic network is often slow. Within EU (especially within DE) it is fine.
