Hey there,
my target audience is mostly from NA. I do live in Germany. Now I am looking for a server that is in the states ( east coast? ) that has a somewhat decent routing the western part of the EU.

Looking for dedicated/vps with 16GB ram, xeon e3 1231 or similar, 256gb ssd, 100mbit, 10tb bandwidth at least.
Do you guys have any suggestions?

East Coast if you need transit to Europe as well, Dallas/Chicago if you need overall USA coverage.

  • New York/NJ/VA is your best bet.

Have a browse of who is present in DE-CIX NY.

I think it is likely anyone there should have good connectivity to Germany - some of those will probably offer NY/NJ dedicated servers.

  • I've been impressed with OVH (BHS) to Hetzner. Haven't tried other destinations much iirc. But I moved a couple terabytes from BHS on a 100mbit outbound port and got the full 100mbit almost the whole time. I don't get anywhere near that from Hetzner to the US.

Sorry for a bit offtopic question, do not want to create a separate thread.

I'm testing Hetzner network from Dubai, UAE location.

    http://lg.emix.net.ae/lg/

Enter here hetzner.com and select trace

Looks like bandwidth to Germany goes through the UK. Why?

Underwater cables. Faster than land transfer.

I would believe it, but enter velia.net here http://lg.emix.net.ae/lg/

the traffic goes through Frankfurt by land. And obviously, it is faster than Hetzner.

I believed Hetzner is connected to DE-CIX (like velia).

That .ae ISP is present at LINX which will generally be a preferred route vs transit.

But is it also listed in DE-CIX

    https://de-cix.net/en/locations/germany/frankfurt/connected-networks

The route through DE-CIX is faster, instead, the traffic goes through London.

For best routing from US to EU I use Steadfast in New Jersey. However Steadfast is very expensive. I pay $200 for a server with almost the exact specs you listed and that is only after negotiating way down from their standard prices which are considerably higher.

  • I've just tested OVH (UK, DE, GRA, SBG), Hetzner, @clouvider, Online.net

clouvider has lowest pings from the west coast locations and OVH GRA from the east.
In the Middle East, they have equal ping. GRA has a bit lower pings in Dubai, Qatar, Bahrain.

clouvider has lower pings in most cases than OVH UK.

Thank you very much for the very kind words @Gulf. We do our very best :-).

    @clouvider

    Some tests

    US

    Clouvider

    Clouvider

    OVH GRA

    Dubai

    Clouvider

    OVH GRA

Clouvider has possibly the best pings from EU to worldwide.

Title says dedicated server, not VPS.

Though to be fair, the actual post says "Looking for dedicated/vps".

In summary, after a lot of tests, I think @clouvider is the choice for NA traffic. A bit expensive for my needs. If they could offer something with 1 ssd disk and 64gb memory under 100$, I will move there.

Unfortunately, the same applies for me.
