Could be worse - Ian Murdock founded Debian, made the name from his wife "Deb", divorced her in 2008, had to be constantly reminded over his wife decision with his project name, worked for Docker, and died in 2015 after hanging himself.
Could be worse - Aaron Swartz was a little bitch who made stupid standards and killed himself to avoid a little jailtime after being convicted of abusing services he was entrusted with.

That was the condensed version of it. The full version isn't any more amusing, but he's been greatly praised on the interweb sites for all of his accomplishments since becoming an hero.
In terms of famous IT people, it's going to be hard to top a guy who murdered his wife for dickishness.
He also received a dollop of stock when Red Hat went public. They gave him $1m in stock or something like that...it was a long time ago.
I've run into Linus multiple times at mundane places since we both live in Portland, though not since I moved over to the East side of Portland, as he lives in Beaverton (or did). No, not at the Microsoft store. And no, I never went up to him because I don't know him.
