Looking for Dedicated 8 or 16GB 1TBx2 with:

Hi,

Been doing a ton of research since discovering LowEndTalk and am grateful for everyone's help and responses. I'm about to pull the trigger on 1 or 2 LEBs here.

So, onto the dedicated. I have a client that needs managed services, but not crazy hardware specs. They would probably be OK with a 2GB KVM setup VPS, but I know they may need a good amount more in the upcoming year and with 4GB KVMs being a bit pricey, I thought I'd investigate the dedicated market.

The idea I came up with is to find a dedicated server that I would split the costs with them if I managed it- so they would save some $ on the server and I'd also get 'half' a server.

So, with that in mind, here are the 'specs' as I best see fit.

Is this doable for < $100?
Location: USA Dallas or Atlanta
CPU: newer Intel, dual core or better
RAM: 8GB with room for 16+
HD: 1TB x 2 with raid controller and room for additional drives
Bandwidth: 1TB - 5TB or so on 1gig port
OS: KVM- I want to be able to VPSs for this client so they don't see any of my other clients on the machine
Panel: WHM/Cpanel
Support: Need to be able to remote reboot, load OS, etc. And if I need hands on, be able to have the hardware support side taken care of. Also, be able to have network support as well.

I've never managed a dedi, but have managed a VPS and been OK so far with infrequent 'help' from my current host. I also plan on hiring someone to secure things as well once things get going.

My main concern is hardware/network support. If there's a hardware issue, I need to know that I can make a call/ticket and get a drive/ram/mobo replaced quickly.

thanks!

John

  • Check out datashack, or send them an email, they could prob do this

  • I couldn't offer this exactly however, as a note, "KVM" is not an operating system. KVM is virtualization software you install on top of an existing operating system.

  • The RAID controller requirement probably throws you out of the LEB/LET market. I recommend looking into mdadm (i.e. software RAID), unless you are 100% sure you NEED it hardware.

  • @fizzyjoe908 I mentioned KVM in case that was on option for a provider to load for me. :)

@rds100 H/W would be nice, but since it's going to be pretty low I/O and bandwidth, I guess s/w raid would suffice, but it never hurts to see what can be done :)

Any other recommendations? anyone to stay away from?

  • @fizzyjoe908 What could you offer? (lesser and more)

All of our budget dedicated servers fit within your budget however I cannot offer RAID on any of them - software or hardware. The only drive configuration available is 1x 500GB SATA HDD.

Did you check the offers section (on WHT)? :P . There are a few offers there in your price range that meet (or exceed) your requirements.

  • A Datashak Dual Intel Xeon 5520 with 2x1TB for Software RAID 24GB 5 IPs 1Gb Port and 2xVPS cPanel U$114 ...install Proxmox VE for free virtualization.

@johnnn Try @qps they're in atlanta and the support is awesome.

  • @domainbop I haven't checked WHT recently,, it's always so overwhelming when I look and I never know what's legit or not.. the people here seem to be (mostly) legit or will speak up when things aren't that great..

@mtoledoce I read that datashack's network isn't that great and heavily filtered... comments?

    @agoldenberg I'll take a look, thank you!

Datashack's gigabit port will not deliver true gigabit speeds. On experience, I would expect that to be 80MB/s or more. Datashack will give you 40-50MB/s if you're lucky and 10-20MB/s if they're a bit busy.

That being said, they do offer some pretty quick support for their prices.

CoreSpace has an E3-1230 v2 w/16GB RAM for $75 in Dallas (only 1 HD but you can add more ),

    They're legit :)

  • Try a rent to own and add your own RAID card and drives. A RAID card (IBM M1015) can be had on eBay for less than $100. You just have to find the right RTO option.

I'll +1 Chromobyte (great service and support) but if they can't give you HW RAID and it's essential, check out Dacentec.

  • Thanks @DomainBop, I'll check it out.
@talsit any recommendations on rent to own places?

  • Chromobyte if there are any left and Dacentec when they have stock. It's older equipment (one to two generations back) but will get the job done. Both of those providers will also rent the same servers indefinitely (they cover equipment repair costs) if that is your preference.

I would like to echo this, with datashack / wholesale internet next in line.

Our Dual Xeon L5420 servers can support up to 4 drives, and we can add a RAID controller for the server if you need it, but it will add to the price. Prices start at $49.

We also have Dual Xeon L5520 servers for a bit more. They can support 3 hard drives. Prices start at $69.

  • @qps thanks, I will check it out! :)
