Providers: what type of people buy those 321321gb openvz things?

I see a shitton of providers post some crazy high ram (4-6gb) for like 5$, I understand it's oversold and it's not an issue but srsly, what kind of people actually buy these things? I mean, how many apps could a legit user have that takes so much ram without going over cpu limits (doubt giving users permission to rape the is not profitable).

I was thinking it was probably people hosting stuff like minecraft servers but idk, could be that 90% of those people are people running nothing or lnmp/lamp stacks with barely 5% of their ram usage.

So what kind of use typically goes into those instances?

  • for most LET users, it's prestige to have SpecialLimitedSuperCheapHighSpec VPS. the VPS itself just idle most of the time, just some benchmark in first week.

  • Apache Spark requires 8GB (virtual) machine, and will consume around 6GB.
Elasticsearch, Cassandra, Redis are all run better on high ram machines, since the datas are cached on memory to speed up process.

Processor usage for those application is less than 1% when idle, and around 20% during peak time on a quad core machine.

  • more == better_than++;

  • In my case: I don't always need dedicated ram/resources for all my servers, so I prefer to save some money in this virtualization.

  • There are some applications like redis or elastic search, that want high ram but not too much cpu. Same thing with SQL databases that like to cache stuff or make large temporary tables for certain kinds of queries.

LAMP is pretty old now when most web development stacks are using JS. CI servers. Cloud storage software (owncloud, nextcloud, etc). Gaming servers. Compiler- heavy tasks

Pretty much all that I get to use my VPSs with high ram.

php is FAR from dying tho

People buy large RAM OpenVZ VPSs for cheap because they still want to run cPanel which is $15/m for the license so the overall cost of the VPS is still on the higher end after you factor in the license. And we all know cPanel loves RAM.

Prob is that when someone sells you 8 GB for $5 you often finds that you can barely use 256 MB.

    But enough about ColoCrossing..

  • A Roy Morgan study found that those idling more than 17 Virmach "service's" where happier than those who had none.

I didn't say it'll die. :p in fact I think it wont. I myself got scripts written in php as Im too lazy to concert them to js lol

I don't use OpenVZ but for my KVM instances I like to have as much RAM as I can because I usually use FreeBSD with zfs-on-root...not to mention the more ram you give mariadb the better especially if you have a ton of websites (and php-fpm can take up a bit too if you have a pool for each website).

OpenVZ sales outnumber anything else by a significant margin, you can use it for almost anything that does not require specific kernels, cPanel, game servers, general hosting, dev environments, anything, it is cheaper than KVM so unless you have a specific reason to use KVM or just feel like your using a more premium product with KVM for personal reasons, why not?

  • It's a response to customer requests. I used to see it all the time in sales and support. Also sometimes you get a node with a lot of extra RAM on it.

A relative majority buying www.overzold.com run minecraft for small communities, not much cpu, no DDoS, we are happy, they are happy. havent seen many running cPanel, though, but there are people running other hosting panels usually very low usage.
We do not offer 8 GB for 5 GBP, but double that and you can absolutely use all your ram storage AND 100% of the CPU, but, like in all budget services, going over 100% or locking cores with mining is not allowed, at least not for more than a few minutes, say half an hour if not very much over and not creating problems on the node. That being said, yesterday a guy had a load of 9k on a 4 threads vm...
