Low End Dedicated

After a cheap dedicated anywhere in the world (although Western US or EU could be good).

CPU: Minimum 4 core (with a passmark of 10k+, EG Intel Xeon E3-1246V3 or better).

RAM: Minimum 16GB DDR3

Disk: Minimum 1TB, (a small SSD or 2nd disk would be nice)

Net: Minimum of 100Mbps, but 1Gbps is better. I won't need a whole lot of bandwidth. 1TB plus should do. 1 IP should be enough

IPMI: Preferred (I break things a lot)

Location: Where ever has a stable DC and good internet. Western US or EU could be handy for a few side projects

Budget: Cheap, real cheap. Absolute limit would be $30 or €25, but I'd prefer a little less than this (even if it means paying quarterly or annually).

... Basically, I'm hoping someone can prevent me from going with Herztner :)

Herztner would likely be your only option at this price point. Or maybe online.net.

    I don't think this is a lowend.

  • You could give soyoustart a try, although it seems to be out of your price range.

This. I saw a passmark of 10k and $30, and had a nice chuckle.

it is unreal - 4 core with a passmark of 10k+

    your budget is too low.

If you want a server that has solid infrastructure but next to no support, then this is an option:

    https://www.databasebydesignllc.com/newportal/cart.php?a=add&pid=20036

    E3-1270 (or better)
    32GB RAM
    240GB SSD
    1 Usable IP
    1Gbps Port
    20TB Bandwidth
CentOS 6 64bit (Self Install Any OS After Setup)
    Dedicated IPMI
    $99/qtr

As long as your server isn't on fire, then don't expect a response to tickets for weeks. They're located in Philadelphia, PA.

The closest to your wish in this budget range would have been the Online LT Deals from last summer... Keep an eye on their next sale...

To show the OP the value for a server like this

  • Dude, I was looking for someone to split one of the nocix beast servers with me a while back, where were you!?!?

Trouble there is the newness, not the speed. If you can stand 9k passmark and don't need Haswell extensions, you can get an i7-3770 from hetzner auction within your budget, or an e3-1245v2 for just a little over your budget.

  • What's wrong with Hetzner?

  • deluxe said:

The cheap Hetzner servers don't have the 10k+ passmark that the OP wanted. But there are some that have over 9k, so I suggested settling for that.

  • I didn't realise that 10k+ score would cause so many issues.

That is a lot more flexible than price, anything 7-8k or above would be fine.
(I was trying to avoid the atom, PIs and boxes more than 10 years old)
i7-3xxx and e3-1245v2 would both be fine.

Does that assist at all? Am I still looking for the impossible?
Thanks for all of the suggestion so far, I have been looking through them!

  • You're going to be lucky to get an i7-3770 from Hetzner under #30 with those specs.

  • deankdeank Member, Troll

You may find something but do note that, when you get something for so cheap, headaches are bound to hit you sooner or later.

i7-3770 (supposedly 9.4k passmark) with 16gb ram and 2x 3tb disks is currently 25.21 euro ex-VAT in hetzner auction. E3-1245v1 is a little more and v2 is around 30 euro. I've had an i7-3770 (with 32gb) from them for a couple of years and the cross-atlantic network isn't the greatest, but other than that it is fine and I'm happy with it.

Offer is really good in fact and does justice to the specs.

I presume to show the OP how much it really costs so next time he or she can set better expectations.

Seriously? You’ve been told like 8 times to not post if you don’t have an offer that suits the OP. Yes, his budget is low, but it doesn’t give you the permission to post an offer that is 2x the price.

You should be banned— people don’t appreciate when 1) you post irrelevant offers and 2) 99.99% of your posts are either low quality or offers.

  • Thanks all. I ended up going with Hertzner, but had great offers via PM as well.
    (Xeon E3-1246V3, 32GB DDR3, 2x2TB SATAIII for €25)

I thank everyone for the discussion, it ended up convincing me that the deal was too good to pass up at Hertzner.
