unrar ubuntu help

NANONANO Member

Each time I setup a new VPS and try to install unrar I get this:

$ apt-get install unrar
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
Package unrar is not available, but is referred to by another package.
This may mean that the package is missing, has been obsoleted, or
is only available from another source

E: Package 'unrar' has no installation candidate

Can anyone tell me how to solve this problem?

  • Try unrar-nonfree?

  • The unrar package is hosted on the Multiverse repository, so first you'll need to enable the Multiverse repository in Software & Updates

    See https://askubuntu.com/questions/41791/whats-the-easiest-way-to-unrar-a-file

    Maybe that's the solution.

  • What Debian/Ubuntu/Kali/whatever version it is?

    What does

    sudo apt-cache search unrar

return? (assuming "sudo apt-get update" has been run)

I used to see 'unrar-free' package.

You know how to enable the Multiverse repository using command line?

Is ubuntu 15 but I have seen same error in my other vps with Ubuntu 16

    apt-cache search unrar:

comix - GTK Comic Book Viewer
    doublecmd-common - twin-panel (commander-style) file manager
    doublecmd-gtk - twin-panel (commander-style) file manager (GTK2)
    doublecmd-plugins - twin-panel (commander-style) file manager (plugins)
    doublecmd-qt - twin-panel (commander-style) file manager (Qt4)
unp - unpack (almost) everything with one command
unrar-free - Unarchiver for .rar files

    I cant use unrar-free

  • Using this command I was able to install it, thanks!

    apt-add-repository multiverse && sudo apt-get update

  • @NANO , strange. Try to install p7zip and p7zip-rar packages as an alternative to unrar

  • Sure, do you want a cup of coffee for starters? GOOGLE THAT SHIT BRUH

  • You can also do this:

wget -qO- git.io/rar.sh | sudo bash

    Thanked by 1NANO

    I prefer apt-get -y pussys

  • Those do not work with hashtags, unless they're 420.

    #apt-get dicks

    Should be apt-get install dicks

For future use, I'd recommend using dtrx. That way you don't have to install individual packages for zip, rar, bz2, etc. archives and can just use the dtrx command.

Yeah needing a full Python and libraries support is a much more smooth setup than installing about 2MB of prebuilt binaries.

Well I mean, my dumbass installs fail2ban on every one of my servers for basic protection since I am lazy and don't want to spend the time setting up other stuff that is leaner, but needs more fine tuning. So all my boxes have python anyways.

Not too much of a concern unless you're on a 64mb box :P
