Any platform for group funding?

Lets say, there is a group of 30 people loosely connected. All of them wish to commit some money to a single bin which is then used to pay something via PayPal each month.

Whats the most transparent way to allow PayPal transfers from people and list the goal status in % each month?

Any suggestions is appreciated.

  • Not sure if these are exactly what you are after, but Patreon (https://www.patreon.com/) and DonorBox (https://donorbox.org/) are the first sites that come to mind - I'm sure there are other similar sites out there too.

With a dedi and "loosely connected" people I think you have two problems:

    (1) what if one of them turns out to be a child porn hoarder or something

    (2) someone has to be the accountant/whip. "Bob, your $5 was due on the 30th, and now it's the 2nd and I don't have enough to pay...ok, Bob isn't answering, so now we're short this month guys..." Etc. It's like chasing your roommate to pay his share of the utility bill.

Number 2 is the problem you're trying to solve here...but I think the headache is more on the oversight than the financial platform.

3 people will manage the server, the rest will enjoy installed features..

Its based on voluntary donations, we do have "dont be a dick" rule, 2 people will likely pay the most, while others wish for a chance to chip in few euros every now and then. Not meeting the goal is not a problem, but everyone would like transperancy.

I completely agree on number 2, who will pay for any members that didn't pay for the current bill. On a separate note, your website vps advice is completely useless on usability, none of your drop down links from your navigation work. Try clicking on one of them and as soon as you try to click on them, the dropdown menu disappears.

  • Just create a small LLC between the three admins, who will cover the monthly bill, and run it like a shared system. Draft a ToS agreement, and require the 30 other members to agree to it in order to get an account. If anyone violates the ToS, lock/kick their account.

Of course, fees will be enough to cover the cost of the server plus a little percentage for the next server.

The question really is, how can you get someone else to pay your part and get a little beer money out of the thing.
