Newb Question about tablets and Win8
I'm looking to get one of the new i5 tables. I need to know if I can install regular Chrome + Java on it and work remotely with IPMI's and stuff. I assume I can install a ssh client on it, but please confirm that, too.
The tablet I'm considering is this one: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=9SIA0ZX0XR3502

What version of windows 8 is it? That will ultimately determine if you can. Try to get the spec's and search google for the installer and java for the same.
Let me tell you, I have an old Iconia tab w500 (x64 processaor, 2gb ram, 32gb SSD) and works like a computer, so probably will do the task as a normal PC
There is also this ultrabook, which looks similar: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834152391
Yes, they will install Chrome and Java just fine. Just look out that it's actually Windows 8, and not Windows RT. Would make your life a whole lot easier.
Wait a few months to get Nokia Windows 8.1 tablet. its going to rock your world!
Chrome doesn't support Java AFAIK
@xset wtf? it does
You're partially right. On my OS X VM Java doesn't work in Chrome, but on Windows it runs perfectly fine.
It does.
Was it an Atom?
Chrome does support Java, but only desktop Chrome. Not the Metro/Windows 8 UI Chrome.

Is it Win8 RT you mean?
It seems this would work just fine despite it's an atom: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834215680
You should check out the new Lenovo Yoga 11S.
Windows RT != Windows 8
That's my experience as well.
I think this is the best for the price: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834230826
$450 on amazon. It has IPS screen and stuff.
Which one would you prefer? This one or this Acer one? http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834230826
@serverian nope, its the AMD one, but it is like an Atom. And they are right, desktop mode works fine. There are 2 methods to open the programs, one is desktop mode, or normal mode, and the other it is from the metro ui. It is limited but best for tablets.
Have you ever tried java on it?
@netomx also did you have Windows 8 or Windows 8 Pro?
Nevermind, it seems java would work as someone mentioned it in the comments of the product. I've bought http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834230826
Thanks everyone.
@serverian why do you need a tablet and not an ultrabook laptop? Did you buy it from newegg? So you live in the USA?
@serverian pro
