Cheap/Reliable VPS (for NZ, so maybe US west coast based?)

So,

I need a VPS to host few things (websites and client sites)... Need a cheap ish VPS with about 2GB Ram, SSD etc... And most of the traffic would be to New Zealand, so probably somewhere with low ping to NZ would be good (I seem to get between 140-230ms ping to LA server ips and probably ~300-350 for EU based servers).

If you give some ips to test i can ping and give a rough idea.

Im currently looking at these offers:

http://www.lowendbox.com/blog/ssd-vps-7-2gb-ram-40gb-ssd-openvz-in-los-angeles/

$7 a month isnt too bad (probably dont want to spend much more than that for a vps though sadly)...

http://www.lowendbox.com/blog/fliphost-7month-2gb-ssd-kvm-vps-in-los-angeles/

HDD is a bit small.. :(

http://www.lowendbox.com/blog/iniz-6-78month-4096mb-ram-vps-in-the-netherlands/

$45/year = 3.75/mth, which is REALLY cheap. Thoughts on this one? They any good?

http://www.lowendbox.com/blog/ugvps-196-months-2048mb-openvz-vps-in-atlanta-buffalo-chicago-la/

Even cheaper than the one above, comes to ~3/mth... Thoughts? They any good as well?

Thanks in advance.. :)

How about a VPS in Australia? http://www.ransomit.com.au/vps

    Test IP: 119.252.16.201

LA is a nice option seeing the fact latency to Europe is only about 110ms

Additional disk can be purchased for the offer @ $.50 per GB

Why not a NZ based host in Auckland?

    https://kgovps.com/xen-nz

I think you can open a ticket and Kro will probably be more than accomodating with a discount.

Or you could pop up @ #leb on freenode.net
I also have a 256M vm with them.

  • +1 for kgovps if you want it in NZ, don't think RAM will come cheap there.

  • The AU servers have about 60-70 ping, i guess NZ based servers are a LOT better...

But saying that, we are talking about $3-7 (US or EU) vs $50-100 (NZ or AU).

So i think for now, i will stick to the $3-7 range. If i get to a point where i REALLY need a nz based server, its probably almost cheaper to buy my own box and chuck it in a data center my self..

  • Any suggestions/offers for $3-7 US Westcoast based VPS with ~2gb ram and ~20gb ssd?

  • Funny that my backup/storage server with Backupsy is giving me a better ping than every other host/ip I try lol...

Hmm I get 50ms ping to RansomIT which is weird cause to another server in Adelaide I get 35ms (I'm on Fibre)

Anyway BuyVM I usually get a good ping to, like 140ms. Same with ChicagoVPS but there server load is always maxed out so it's not exactly usable so I'm not going to recommend them.

However I've got a DigitalOcean box at their San Fran DC and man that is quick! It's gonna be more expensive for your needs but it's the best I've tried so far between US to NZ. I can get about 8mb/s using a proxy on it, some reason Telecom has shitty peering to Europe so I proxy data through that and go from 1mb/s to 8mb/s :p

So yea check out DigitalOcean if you want to spend a little bit more, or 2nd choice is BuyVm but no SSD :(

  • Looked into DigitalOcean, their speeds seem really solid for me (im on adsl, and getting a solid 9 mbits consistantly, which is about right). Great for proxies...
Ping for their SFO ip's are great, at around 147. But the price is a bit high... well not too bad actually (1gb server for $10/mth). If they would price match or do cheaper deals, i would defiantly be sold on this...

How do they compare against someone like ($3.5 vs $20):
    http://www.lowendbox.com/blog/ugvps-196-months-2048mb-openvz-vps-in-atlanta-buffalo-chicago-la/

  • If you can live without SSD, we can get you setup with a 2GB RAM 100GB ssd-cached raid10 disk 5TB bw server for $7/m out of Los Angeles.

DO isn't bad cost, quality and performance wise, ping from Wollongong, Sydney is average 170ms to the San Fran DC.

I'm getting about 135-137ms to both Cloud shards and Crissic, I'm guessing you guys are both at CC?

No! We're at MultaCOM. Probably means it so happens to go through the same transit for that particular AS Path.

I am from NZ and am using @oxide weloveservers.net VPS. I've got couple of VPS from their Los Angeles location.
Here's a link to their recent offer:

Their VPS are really good and support team always answers you within 15 mins or so. You won't be disappointed with them.

@netsujit ping is pretty high from Sydney avg 316ms.

To the Los Angeles, California – 192.210.195.2

Not sure why is it for you. From Auckland... am getting ping avg 190ms

  • @netsujit I suspect it's 300ms due to being with pipe/tpg. They do things out of the norm and are a budget ISP. Hard to optimize for.

Never knew it can be done that way :(

They have their own cables and fiber takes a huge walk around the place imposing quite a lot of latency. They are also known for congestion with cheap unlimited plans.

The best way out of AU/NZ is Southern Cross cable. NZ should use this by default. It lands in San Jose I remember. Forgot. Need to check the maps.

  • @concerto49 Yup... you are right. I guess for SCC its NZ-->Hawaii-->San Jose. Not sure if they added any other endpoints since then.
