Soo, A 72T is 60TB in R6 lets say 56TB usable.. 3.33EUR*56 = 222USD... Server is 439USD sooo, math is not working here.

And the iops of a couple drives total.

That too, R5/6 is only good for backups. No write gains, which is why you need a decent SSD cache to cope. I cant see any reference to that server having SSD Cache.

Should R10 it, and find out that it now costs over 10$ per TB. If LET want cheap, fast storage, its going to be unsafe (R0) Even then, its like 6$/TB cost

At that price you can get a dedi wrapped around the disks.

Exactly... you see the point now? That one dedi, that meets you needs is now being shared to 10's of VPS users with your needs, server is now overloaded and "shit".

  • Reality is if you are using enterprise/commercial grade disk ROI is way out.

Wholesale for a 4TB disk is like 99$ or less for WD RE drives. so lets say 100 for brand new.

at 6 dollars a TB for a sales price..... for a 2tb option then 12 dollars a month... times another user so 24$ a month.... that would mean ROI is NOT 5 months. nope not even close...

So dedicated 1GB line? some places 5-900 a month for your rack/space of rack.
So big boxes lets saw you got a 1/4th rack.... a 1GB line.. and paying 1500 for the line and the space with power...Obviously Tie 1 Power situation and Tier 1 network blend.

now lets say we throw in a storage box.... knowing a certain 360tb CEPH box is about 41k.. Lets say you got that. has all you need. and assume the colo host is providing the router/switch....

assuming no other costs that is only 1080$ income per month... you would have to over sell by half... You would have a box that has a max of 360TB and offer 540TB worth of storage on it to break even pretty much... You would double the that to 620TB to really start paying back your costs....

This is assuming no other overhead costs...

Now....... lets say... RAID 1.... double all of that above.. just double it...... It isn't really feasible to NOT oversell. unless you use cheap drives and do not get a dedicated 1GB uplink for this one box.

Obviously if you colo an entire rack you would need to get a decent profit on HW elsewhere.

Now obviously you can get places with cheaper dedicated colo costs but not a Tier 1 blend for cheap. Be real on the cost to recover... At this price its going to be a long game....Storage servers benefit from the cheap cost to keep running and a low service cost.. Drop the service cost and profit can be good but ROI on good decent equipment will take awhile.
