Beta Test NVMe UK Hourly - prem de la prem

Beta Test NVMe UK Hourly - prem de la prem

vmhausvmhaus Member, Provider

Ladies and Gentlemen,

Boys and girls of all ages. Today the prem de la prem of the hosting industry has just been reached. You thought the bar was set, today the bar has been raised. VMHaus today is running a beta test for our new product powered by Bonsai and @Clouvider

Over the past few weeks we have been putting the pieces together for our completely custom control panel, Bonsai, yeah that's a couple of weeks (just over a month to be exact). Dear SolusVM our developers have CV’s on hand in case you need help playing tennis using office fans instead of launching V2.

We are launching brand new hourly billed NVMe KVM servers inside @Clouvider’s new Telehouse North 2 data center. The latest addition to the Clouvider and VMHaus family. The Clouvider network vastly improves our connectivity in London including direct peering with Liberty Global (Virgin Media, UPC, Aorta and more) with direct and recently upgraded ports to LINX 1 & 2 (which allows us to peer with BT, Sky, TalkTalk, Zen and more!) and up links include the usual (Level3, NTT, GTT, Telia, Cogent)

Thanks to some recent upgrades out Clouvider their network is now locally DDoS protected thanks to our on-site DDoS protection with NTT protection staying on hand for those larger attacks

Moving away from our mouthwatering network we move to our mouthwatering hardware. We’ve gone with a brand spanking new Xeon E3-1270 v6 which clocks in at 3.8GHz with a nice little boost to 4.2GHz. We've also thrown (gently placed by Dom) 64GB of ECC DDR4 RAM for good measure finally backed by our 1TB Samsung NVMe disks which give your applications that little push to run faster.

Finally we need your help to make sure our developers had enough coffee in them and make sure they didn't slack off half way through. So we are introducing a beta test where we are inviting a decent crowd from LET to come test our panel. You'll be provided with a free VPS for the duration of the beta (around 2 weeks) of which will be a 1 Shared Core, 512MB of DDR4 RAM, 10GB of Blisteringly fast NVMe and the 500GB of premium bandwidth.

You may be asking well what do I get from this? A free VPS for 2 weeks you can drool at some benchmarks, what more do you want for free. If you are helpful spot a bug, give some detailed insight you might have a dollar or two on your account by the end of the beta coming fresh out of the pocket of the developer that caused the cockup. We are using this beta test to see are you interested in this and how much coffee our developers missed (judging by their Tassimo bill I don't think it was much).

Feedback is amazing so drop it in a ticket either one of our dedicated panel monkeys or myself will look into it and see where we can go.

Come join us at the NVMe fun house https://bonsai.vmhaus.com/

To apply for free credit for the beta submit a ticket to the Beta Credit addition department.

It's very good, i try to login, it says login successfully then it redirects me to login again. Must be new security measures, where you literally have to login 500 times. Maybe you should've been more prepared before pissing on someone else who has something working already.

Make sure to click the activate link in the email - I can login after that and refreshing the login page. When activating I got another "Whoops that didn't work - Account activated"

Works now. It's probably going to be better in the long run if you add a message along with the "Account created" stuff that tells you to check your email.

1st attempt at creating account - 500 error

2nd attempt - Whoops, that didn't work, account created

Login was just a loop back to the login screen.

Got email (there was no notice of activation or email on the create. I assume that's what the "whoops" was about)

Activation link in email worked, but gave me another "whoops"

    Can now access panel :)

    Panel Monkey report:

    1) 500 error, fixed small issue mostly caused by my doctor telling me to go easy on the coffee and lucozade.
    2) login loop. I've got my head firmly mashed into pycharm sorting now.
    3) Error/success. Fixed, when you've had 2 months of developing a panel you don't know if you are a failure or a success.
    4) Email invalid @rumi4 - We run DNS checks other checks on your mail server to ensure your email is valid. This reduces us sending mail that gets bounced.
    5) Thank you for the holy freevps.us benchmark, never fails to give me that tingling feeling.
    6) VNC highlight, we've addressed this in much more detail in the ticket and I think we are on the same track.
    7) @FlamesRunner its a huge blast, much like the yeti @AuroraZ craves, and yes you want yeti, i'll show you yeti.
    8) @rumi4 Inspired by 4am python coding watching the inbetweeners movie. No 50 euro fines here

Hmm... the log in page looks too green that I have a hard time trying to see the white text to find the create account button.

I'm going to sign up and try if your still accepting people.

Edit: you should add a message for inactivated accounts that they should activate it with their link. I tried logging in before doing that and I just get sent back to log in and got confused. Is the 404 for the notification intended? Like is it made yet?

Regarding the sign up email - I don't think there was a notification stating that you needed to activate your email before proceeding.

I later found the email, although it wasn't sorted into primary/updates on my google apps email - Had to delve into the depths of 'all mail' to retrieve it.

Other than that, everything looks nice and clean - I'm liking it so far. I'll update if there's any other shenanigans afoot.

@vmhaus Two minor suggestions for the account signup page:

    1. There's an error message if you fail to fill in a mandatory field. Ideally it should name the missing required fields.
    2. The Firefox built in password manager thought the postcode field was the username. Probably because the postcode box was just before the password box. There's probably an HTML hint you can put on the email address box, or worst case move the email address box to just before the password box.

Here are two four five six seven eight another things:

    • Decide if you want to go from bright green to dark green or vice versa. Right now login and register pages go from bright to dark green, but the result pages go from bright to even more bright green, which makes the text hard to read. Here is a image what I'm talking about.
I'd actually prefer faster gradient change and only at first (login) page. It would kinda make "loading" impression.

    • Change MySQL conding from default latin-1 to utf-8, because it splits out an error with letters like "Ł" (city in my example):

    • Use Gravatar for avatars and tell user about it under Settings tab, because now I have stock avatar and no way to change it (you know... small details that affect the overall impression)

    • Add more templates! For example: Debian 7 and 8. The same thing applies to Ubuntu 14.04. Not everybody is content with newer OS versions. Also think in this order about: Fedora, Windows, FreeBSD, CoreOS.

    • Favicon near tab title is missing

    • Buttons in control panel are too bright in my opition.
Open the image in full size here.

    • "Notifications" tab redirects to 404!

    • After adding SSH key I should be able to look it up later!

I can see @Dawgy left some marks under frontend source code. Good job! You did a great work.

    Edit: Two more things added.
Edit2: One more thing added Edit3: Added yet another thing

    Edit4:
I feel like @Dawgy gonna hate me... :C I'll share with you some of that money if I get any! I promise!

vmhaus said: If you are helpful spot a bug, give some detailed insight you might have a dollar or two on your account by the end of the beta coming fresh out of the pocket of the developer that caused the cockup.

    Edit 5: One more thing...
Edit 6: Yup.... You guessed it. Yet another thing :G
    Edit 7: Added proposed templates

    Panel monkey here again:

    1) Yes we are working on the activating account popup thingy. (Please go easy on me)
    2) Notifications for ticket replys have stopped, they did work I probably broke something checking now.
    3) @MrPsycho
3a) Colour change is thing we added looks different and to be honest when drunk looks bloody cool. I'll admit that goes too bright and I'll inject a few mg of caffeine into UI dev. Stand by.
3b) MySQL stuff working on shortly, all our devs have US/UK keyboards and didnt check that one out.
    4) @cheapskate
4a) Understood I'll look into it however seems like a little too much messing about instead of people filling fields, that said taken on board.
4b) Ah I see, I think I heard wind of this before but was never given actual insight. Will look into modifying over the next 24 hours.
    5) @ben47955 Notifications gives 404 is known I just havent had time and our UI guy insisted we had it.
    6) @halczy NVMe + E3-1270v6 is the dream.
    7) prem de la prem/creme de la creme, one of our devs fucked off to france and well blame him for bugs and puns.

Taken on board is a low priority but understood

    Add more templates!

We spent 3 days swearing at CentOS, we are working on it. Any other templates you think would be useful?

  • On billing tabs it's say "Refer a friend for credit!", but I can't find any links to share, maybe this is in the To do list ...

Of course referring a friend to a free beta isn't going to earn you money/credit ;)

We've also thrown (gently placed by Dom) 64GB of ECC DDR4 RAM for good measure finally backed by our 1TB Samsung NVMe disks which give your applications that little push to run faster

Why E3? The 64GB RAM limit is still fairly low (but much better than pre-v6) and dual channel only which on a 4x PCIe SSD setup can be limiting as well.

I'd have used ~ E5-1650 (v3/v4) which offers similar performance per core (but is 6) with quad channel memory, registered ECC (not unbuffered) up to 1.5TB and 40 vs. 16 PCIe lanes - unlike the dual socket E5 the 16xx series has some serious turbo, also up to 4Ghz ~.
