What are people using their Host1Free VPS for?

After waiting a few days, I've now got a Host1Free VPS, ~800MHz/128MB with 256 Swap/10GB HDD/Bandwidth ?

What are people using theirs for? I was going to use it as an asterisk voip pbx, but with the reports of downtime, unreliability, I won't bother. I was looking at @trexos monitoring script which I could use to monitor my other servers, 1 in use 2 idleing, but if H1F is not reliable then that doesn't seem very useful.

So what to do? VPN? or something like this https://my.securedragon.net/knowledgebase.php?action=displayarticle&id=40

Anyone with any other ideas?

  • I had one once. I could never connect to it with any reliability. When I could the network was INSANELY SLOW. So, nothing mission critical. I had thoughts about putting a 2nd IRC server for my network on it. Didn't work out. The reliability was too poor.

  • They are not fools, certainly they strictly disables PPP and TUN/TAP to prevent public VPN been set up. So I think if used for proxy, the only things possible are SSH tunnels, SPDY proxy and HTTP/HTTPS proxy.

Does this mean I can't do http://www.lowendtalk.com/discussion/6106/openvpn-community-software-auto-installer-for-centos-5-6-debian-6-and-ubuntu-10-10 or something like this https://my.securedragon.net/knowledgebase.php?action=displayarticle&id=40 on it?

The node is located in Germany. The following are the tests I done with it:

    DISK IO TEST
    [root@ ]# dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/sda2 bs=100M count=1 oflag=direct dd: writing/dev/sda2': No space left on device
    1+0 records in
    0+0 records out
    67104768 bytes (67 MB) copied, 0.889405 seconds, 75.4 MB/s

    Comment: not bad.

Additionally, I used an automatic script to compile Nginx, PHP-fpm and MYSQL on it today, and took about 2.5 hours (compared to 20 minutes on Linode 1024).

  • VNC is OK. But for PPTP VPN, you do not have access to ppp virtual network, which means you will be disconnected by peer if you try to connect to a VPN Server in this container.

  • just installed ajenti (it mentioned in another discussion and i give it a go :) )

  • @sundaymouse - thanks
@tridinebandim - how much memory is used? which is the lightest control panel -kloxo/webmin/zpanel/ajenti?

With no actual php website hosted, it consumes 126MB of physical memory (half of which is cached), also with 80MB of vSwap occupied.

  • @asterisk14 just nginx, no mysql, no php and ajenti loads about 45 mb ram(after service restart), and it gets bigger when you login and log out :) 45 - 56 -61 ... i dont know why :)

What you did has generated cached RAM.

can use for testing other vps. i.e. client to do siege or ab?

  • Mine just idles.

  • I did the upload and download test and yes, both capped at 10Mbit/s, but this is not big deal as my ADSL internet is only 6Mbit/s download! Installed asterisk and webmin, so far so good.

Well, no much point in using it for VNC as I am in UK, so better to use my US VPS as VNC/VPN.

Asterisk - no, need high reliability - going to use my reliable EU VPS for that and another reliable US VPS as backup.

WWW - I am re-learning HTML, I have made a crappy site with the best VPS deals http://zaheer.ml so I think I will use it for that!

Testing - test control panels, scripts, installs, although it takes some time to complile/install anything. I've only been using it for a day, but it seems OK, not too slow and not that zippy. It didn't cost me anything so can't complain.

@mojomuju @Jeffrey - why don't you donate it to a cause, or let someone learn linux on etc..... don't waste resources that someone could use.

  • i use it as proxy and a small site

  • Whats the upload and download speed of a host1free VPS in KB's ?

    =10 Mbps [Megabit-per-second]

    =10000 Kbps [Kilobit-per-second]

    =1.25 MB/sec [Megabyte-per-second]

    =1250 KB/sec [Kilobyte-per-second]

This is more than enough for normal needs!
