Private Ip's?

Okay so I've been checking the WHOIS of various websites and I have been looking at the server stats. While taking a look at them I see that the name of company is displayed there for example if I log over to hostigation.com WHOIS and click server stats it shows me 'California- Pacific Palisades- Hostigation' Now my question is how does hostigation get it's name there and even if it buys the IP Address how does it assign it to the current internet provider they are running on? This thing has been bugging me since quite a lot of time.

Thank You,
Marvel

  • Hi @Marvel

If I understand correctly about what your asking, its how does Hostigation have their own routable IP space?

There are many ways to get it. In this case Tim doesn't seem to own his own IP space? I don't know but I could be wrong. I am going based on this IP

In this case, Tim doesn't seem have a direct allocation from Arin(you can apply for IP space from RIR Then get your own ASN for routing traffic via upstream provider(fancy word for ISP)

If you have your own IP space, you need to maintain additional servers to perform WHOIS etc, don't know the particulars again. I'd look up more Wikipedia but SOPA is annoying.

For reference BuyVM have their own IP space

If any of the info is incorrect I apologise. Its 2 in the morning and I should be in bed.

  • He may just have IP space assigned to him, but the IP space is owned by someone else. For example, 69.53.223.x is assigned to us, and we administer it even as far as setting reverse DNS on it, but our datacenter owns the IP block that it's part of.

    This came up: http://bgp.he.net/search?search[search]=hostigation&commit=Search

  • Well, I am pretty sure that Tim owns his own space now. The move to the new datacenter comes with a new IP. Here is one from the new space 69.85.88.8.

You don't need your own IP space to have IPs assigned to you. If I remember correctly, IP owners can have the IPs SWIPed to your information, and OrgIDs and POC are free to register (OrgID takes 24-48 hours to be approved though).

  • @KuJoe, you are correct and in the whois that dclardy posted it clearly shows it's a reallocation.

  • Ok so what will be the price? Suppose I wanna buy from the range 0 to 255 block?

  • Really depends on whom you get it from. I have a bunch of Class C's for my servers but they come included with my uplinks as part of the price that they charge.

Best bet would be to contact your provider and see what they can do for you in terms of pricing.

ICANN and the other groups don't divvy up blocks of Class C's anymore. Too small for them I believe.

  • Wow I guess I never can get it! Ok so that's have companies like Facebook have their name in the server stats..but the confusing part is do they have a private line for internet connection or does their ISP provide them their name in the server stats?

Facebook has their own ASN and data center so they purchase their own IPs and get their network links directly from the providers.

  • Ok...Now I am kind of getting it.

If you don't are an arin or regional registry (RIR) usually you can get two kind of address space:
    Provider Aggregatable (PA)
    Provider Independent (PI)

PA address space are assigned from the ISP's allocated PA space and an inetnum object entry is created in the arin or RIRs database. PA aren't portable between ISP, you have to renumber in case of ISP change.

PI address space are assigned from arin or RIRs and are portables between ISP's. The main problem of PI is that a large number of carriers don't allow routes smaller that a /24 to be learned by bgp, so even if you can get smaller PI networks, usually /24 is the smallest assignment you should consider.

  • By the way, from your title, you;re talking about Private IPs which is usually local IPs but the discussion is about assigned public IPs.

We're all talking about the same thing, right?

  • Yes..I was a bit confused about this entire stuff and by private IP's I mean IP's which have your name in the whois which actually is called as assigned IP's and yes we're still talking about the same thing.

  • We dont own ours but our information is still shown like others mentioned..

    status: ASSIGNED PA
