Guaranteed RAM and burstable RAM

WInterntWInternt Member

Hi

If my VPS showes this:

How much garanteed ram I have? 4GB? I'm asking this because my host says it's 2 Gb guaranteed and the other 2 are burst.... If 2Gb are burst, should not appear as swap?

Thanks :D

    2GB. Burstable =/= Swap.

Probably a lot less than 2GB even, don't always believe what you're told

    What's the difference?

vswap is virtual swap, slowed down memory which is presented to the container as swap space.
Many applications run much better with it and some are crashing/misbehaving badly without it.
Burst ram is available in certain conditions.
Your guaranteed ram is what you are supposed to be able to use at any time. Depending on host and sometimes, node, it is not always available.
If it isnt, you should change host, because you are being defrauded.

This VPS with 3.5 Gb used has excellent performance :D

I'm running Minecraft servers without problems, and minecraft is heavy :s

    You'll be suspended soon

Why? Lol, 1 year running Minecraft servers and my host knows that :)

  • 2GB Ram/2GB Burst

  • But the burst are suposed to be shared with other clients?

  • @WInternt Correct. That 2GB Burst ram is not guaranteed. If the node you are on has less than 2GB Ram idling, you will not get that burst ram.

The definition of "Burst" in IT means "discard eligible". In other words you can't really rely on burst RAM.

True. But it depends on host, not everyone oversells that much, some people know the limits they can push.
Here is top from one server (Dual E5, 24 threads, 64 gb ram):

    top - 10:13:56 up 47 days, 7:22, 2 users, load average: 3.38, 4.26, 4.11
    Tasks: 4674 total, 4 running, 4660 sleeping, 2 stopped, 8 zombie
    Cpu(s): 11.9%us, 3.3%sy, 0.3%ni, 83.5%id, 0.1%wa, 0.0%hi, 0.8%si, 0.0%st
    Mem: 65805788k total, 62211444k used, 3594344k free, 2095284k buffers
    Swap: 19529720k total, 566364k used, 18963356k free, 26947504k cached

    [root@pm32 ~]# free -m
total used free shared buffers cached
    Mem: 64263 60755 3507 0 2049 26260
    -/+ buffers/cache: 32445 31817
    Swap: 19071 553 18518

This is a healthy node with plenty of spare resources for spikes when needed.
We can afford to sell cheap and not oversell, the only problem with our OVZ is the restarts that plague it, I hope that after the patch whoever was abusing them will get a break till another bug is found.

EDIT: For comparison, an OVerZold node (picked one exactly same make like the other, for easier comparison):

    top - 10:23:38 up 13 days, 2:51, 1 user, load average: 6.69, 7.55, 7.17
    Tasks: 2864 total, 8 running, 2849 sleeping, 2 stopped, 5 zombie
    Cpu(s): 36.0%us, 9.3%sy, 0.4%ni, 54.2%id, 0.0%wa, 0.0%hi, 0.0%si, 0.0%st
    Mem: 65805788k total, 62945108k used, 2860680k free, 1270336k buffers
    Swap: 33046520k total, 277852k used, 32768668k free, 19419932k cached

    [root@pm37 ~]# free -m
total used free shared buffers cached
    Mem: 64263 61604 2658 0 1241 18990
    -/+ buffers/cache: 41373 22890
    Swap: 32271 271 32000

Load is double and free ram is no longer 50%, but about 30.
Still plenty of resources for peaks (that happens during evening mostly when kids start their minecrafting or other games). At times load goes as high as 20 for 24 threads and goes past 24 when there are abusers with loads 10 times over their plan limit (had ppl with 2 k load, but it only affects their cores, we had idle cpu percentage all the time).

  • vSwap is poor. Plus usually oversold. (Majority). Whereas with guaranteed you know what you're getting is 100% (Hopefully anyway!) haha.
