Short URL service hosting allowed ?

sbmcosgsbmcosg Member

Hello people,

I recently got a small 3letter domain and its pretty good for a url shortner service,

But i was doing some research on this and found that Service providers shut down there services due to spam link complaints.

I mean i will not be spamming, but cant help if one does use this service to do exactly that.

so my question is , what is your policy as a provider ... would you allow me to host such a short url service on your servers ?

short url service on a vps. I wouldn't see why I wouldn't allow it

  • Seems strange to not allow that sort of thing based on potentiality. I certainly would allow it as well.

Use meta redirect for your script and you'll be fine I believe.
Your domain will never be logged as referrer.

You will have abusers for sure (spam, scam, cp sites).

    Ok that was positive, :)

You guys have any recommendation for this kind of setup ?

    No!

Don't rely on client-side scripts to redirect.

You are going to get a lot of abuse. Yeah, it's only an URL shortener, but providers will ask you to desist when they start getting spam complaints.

  • LOL, I might be too late for an answer. but anyways, you can host your own url shortening service with Azetrix's ShortLink service @ github https://github.com/azetrix/shortlink

I am using this project in a shared hosting for my own short domain https://yourls.org/.
It works fine both shared hosting and VPS.

  • Though URL shortening services itself is fine for most hosting providers, chances are that once your shortening service starts drawing visitors, your database will be filled with Warez/Pornography/Online gambling links (based on my experience) and you know they are usually not allowed. So be sure to actively monitor your links.

I don't see a problem with them but be aware that the majority of abuse reports we receive are from URL shorteners. If you use WHOIS privacy with your domain then that might be a problem if you're generating a lot of reports and costing the host a lot of extra money supporting you.

My recommendation to you is to not hide your WHOIS information so the abuse reports will go to you and not your host. Also I would open a ticket with the host and request that your VPS's IP be SWIP'ed to your information to reduce the abuse reports to your host even more. Lastly, find a host that advertises 24x7 managed support to avoid costing the host additional money to support you if you do generate a fraction of the abuse reports I deal with.

    Just my two cents. :)
