Internet censorship in different countries?

Since today we (all ISPs in Bulgaria) are required by a law and a court disposition to block access to some online gambling sites.

I wonder, what is censored in other countries?

    The Great Firewall of China:

  • Currently in the UAE; nothing terribly exciting that I've found blocked besides the usual things you'd expect from a relatively conservative Islamic country.
    I've heard of police turning up at hotel doors in Abu Dhabi because the occupants were contacting colleagues in Israel, but it's just hearsay to be honest.

    I'm interested to see how the filtration will change once I cross the border to Saudi Arabia though.

    On a semi-related point, here's a fairly good talk by a couple of Tor's developers talking at a CCC conference.
    Worth a watch!

    @rds100 Over here in Macedonia there is no internet censorship.

    PS: Do You know what kind of technique will be used for censoring content in Bulgaria? Or it's up to the operator to decide?

    Zen pretty much summed it up.

  • Here in Sri Lanka few (about 20) Pr0n sites are blocked. But only on some ISP's. And tamilnet.com ( news site of terrorists ) is blocked since a long time and it was the first website to be blocked here.

    Exactly the same in Slovenia since 2010.
    On 28 January 2010 the Slovenian National Assembly adopted changes to the law governing gambling. Under the law Internet service providers are responsible for blocking access to Internet gambling web sites that are not licensed by the Slovenian government.
    Few biggest international betting websites are blocked (DNS hijacking) but most of them are still available. I can also pay or withdraw payment from blocked websites with my bank account without problem.

    I am not sure how much up-to-date is this http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Internet_censorship_by_country but you may find it interesting.

    China (PR of) use the world's most advanced technology on Internet Censorship.

    Including:
    `

    • TCP IP-blacklist reset (constantly);
    • PPTP/L2TP protocol blocking (intermittently);
    • address and content keyword filtering for transparant connections;
    • fully automated distinguish of OpenVPN connections(jesus christ!) and block them;
    • exhaustive search for PHP proxy scripts and block them, official DDOS and hacking;
    • seizing people by geo targeting, give sentence to them in court with the evidence from wiretapping.
      `

    Above is for hosts outside their control (not within China), if the host is within China, the government has the ultimate authority to shut down a website by pressurising the provider, ban a political keyword or retrieve user information without any limit.

    Six years before the Snowden, these strategies are the open secret in China.

    So are there any countries WITHOUT any censorship? Which country is the best for using it as gateway (VPN) in terms of getting monitored and censored?

  • There is no kind of internet censorship in Germany. The government tried to introduce DNS blocks against childporn sites ago but it failed due to people's protests.

    @gsrdgrdghd But still, the traffic is monitored by german intelligence service (BND)

    "An zentralen Knotenpunkten des deutschen Internets wie in Frankfurt am Main unterhält der Dienst eigene Räume, um Zugriff auf die Daten zu haben. Die Auswertung erfolgt vor allem in Pullach."

    True, but i guess there isn't a single country where that's not the case.
