Services to build servers?

I am planning to colocate a few servers. Earlier I order one at my home and built the server and shipped it a DC. But now I don't want to build it myself and instead get it done and shipped directly to the DC. I tried searching that shows a few services... but it is not immediately clear which one to use.

What services do providers here use to build servers and then ship directly to a datacener for colocation? I don't need to order a large quantity... maybe 5-10 1U E3s or a lesser quantity of dual E5s.

Contact preferred DC and ask them for a custom quote. I believe most of them will do server build + colo with some sort of commitment.

All DCs should be able to do it for you for a reasonable fee. Though we've done this for customers that shipped their servers to DC's in Portugal.

Thanks. What is expected cost of a Supermicro E3-1270v5/32GB/256GB when built by a DC?

If you're purchasing the equipment from the DC, it might end up more expensive. Usually, we ship the components and DCs charge us for remote hands to put them together. Depends on what you negotiate. I've seen different pricing on this, so it will depend on the DC's remote hands fees.

Is Supermicro your preferred brand? If not, let DC decide what hardware to use. For example: our DC has very good deal with HP. Due to this, DC can offer very attractive prices for branded HP ProLiant Gen9 servers on RTO (rent-to-own) basis.

Don't enforce, let them to provide you with nice offers.

Its really hard to estimate, it may vary upon datacenter, country and amount of time required to perform such a task. Countrys with higher income might charge more due to the costs of labour being higher. Best thing would be to ask for a quote from each datacenter you are interest in and re evaluate your options.

What is the reason for doing this as opposed to just renting bare metal servers? Doesn't seem to be much of a cost benefit for generic hardware as far as I can tell.

This was my original thought too since a service specializing in building hardwares should be more efficient due to scale. Do you have any reference for such a service?

Not really. I have a Dell PE720 which has been working well for over 4 years now. I want to get an idea of what it would cost. Can you share some of your figures please? PM please if it needs to be private. :)

Dedicated servers are fine for smaller specs like E3. It is much more cost efficient to colocate beefy servers for sustained high throughput usage. This is my personal experience but could be wrong. Feel free to share your thoughts on this. :)

In that case you might want to look into something like this, seeing as how colo mostly charges based on rack space and power use.

  • The bigger question is what kind of support SLAs do you need. Outsourcing the details of logistics, inventory management, and technical staff is one of the reasons people buy servers with support contracts from the big OEMs like Dell.

ServersDirect.com (http://www.serversdirect.com/) will build custom servers. You can specify everything, although most of their parts are from Supermicro. I've never tried to ship them to a third-party facility, but I don't see why that couldn't be arranged.

System76 (https://system76.com/servers) sells servers as well. They're pretty flexible spec wise, but you're stuck with whatever parts they pick. For instance, you couldn't spec an Areca RAID card versus an LSI card like you can with ServersDirect.

This is a good point. HP, or the datacenter, probably has a cabinet of spare parts there which would speed up repairs.

  • another question is were do you want to buy the servers from, UK, US etc ?
