For single lines, use `.

` text goes here`

will get you text goes here

For multiple lines, use ~~~.

~ ~ ~
text 
goes 
here
~ ~ ~

(without the spaces) will get you

text goes here 

But markdown like ``` will break, even though it's supposed to work.

goes
here

I've been using backticks, but never quite figured out why it doesn't always work.
