Help my Plex server find a new home!

So, OVH's 20% price rise has royally fucked me in fudge tunnel the has made my Plex box unsustainable. It's only a £7ish price hike, but as I'm only running this for friends and family there's a limit and I have to be strict.

The spec of the current server is way OTT anyway, so my minimum requirements are more modest.

CPU: Something that that runs a PassMark in the region of 6k

RAM: 4GB

HD: 2TB

BW: 100Mb/s

Data transfer: 4TB (first month only), 2TB thereafter

Location: Europe, close to the UK the better, but not actually inside the UK.

IPv4: 1

IPv6: 1 address would be nice to have, not absolutely essential though

Price: £30/$40

Obviously aware of the usual Kimsufi shenanigans but I haven't time to sit there waiting for the right model to become available. Online.net can go and fuck themselves.

Let me know what you have!

  • Hetzner?
    Intel Core i7-2600 8307passmark 16 GB RAM 20TB Bw 2 x 3 TB HDD € 28.57 (without VAT)

  • For some reason, I'm hesitant when it comes to Germany.

Where have you seen that price?

  • serverboerse.de
by default they show it with german VAT tho. Click the country flag to see the UK VAT rates

You don't have to. Germany loves you! At least one single weirdo in the center of the country does. <3
And - on a more serious note - fuck OVH. Go with Hetzner IF you decide to go with Germany.

  • I use a Kimsufi KS-4C I5 in France for € 21.99 and it works fine in the U.S.

https://servdiscount.com/en/ has this server for ~£32/month. Cheaper if you go for longer terms.

As I said, fully aware of Kimsufi and I'm not waiting around for the right model to come in stock. The model you've referenced doesn't meet my CPU requirement.

Doesn't look like that's still there, but there's something similar for €30. I assume VAT is to be added to those prices?

Got any experience with them? Pricing looks interesting.

Their upload is shit, their download is good. But it will probably be enough for a plex server.

Quantify 'shit'? I'm regularly uploading content to mine, so if it's genuinely appalling it'll be an issue, but 'shit relative to upload' is less of an issue.

  • If you're going through a list of hosts with a bad reputation, why not add https://contabo.com/?show=vps to that list?

On a more serious note, hetzner.

Upload on server = download on client.

So while their download is good (=you can upload stuff TO it fast), their upload is quite low, so your streaming might be impaired.

If the I3 model is ok for you, over 5k Passmark, less then you said though, we could do @Nekki special to fit it into your budget ;-)?

Thanks for the offer, but I'm swerving the UK on this one.

Instantdedis tends to do custom negotiations over email. I got a good offer from them via email recently. Just didnt have a use for it at this time because I am working 100 hour weeks through January. They could prob throw you the rest of your specs for a few $$ more. Or negotiate down some resources to get others up.

$29/month, $10% discount for yearly rate
    Includes IPMI
    Unmanaged Dedicated Server
    8 core CPU C2758
    8GB RAM
    1TB HD
    1GB/s uplink, 10TB bandwidth
    Free 2GB protection
    4 usable IP addresses (IPv4 or IPv6)
    NY Location

No, I meant how do you know your interpretation of his words is correct and mine isn't?

Jup, the download from the server is bad or the upload from the server to the client.

You also probably don't want his Tentacle Hentai porn on it.

  • @Nekki if your happy with a KVM VM can do the specifications your after for the budget (Nekki discount)

  • hawc said: You also probably don't want his Tentacle Hentai porn on it.

    Fair comment.

Thanks for the offer, but it needs to be a dedi so I can thoughtlessly hammer the crap out of the disk and CPU whenever I want.

Maybe run it for an extra friend that is willing to chip in? migrating it for £7 does not sound like fun.

I bursted into laughter the moment I heard "chicago"

Can't take money for it, might have to shut the fucker down within a couple of months if the latest bit of brutal UK legislation gets passed.

Migration's not exactly taxing though, if I can hit my price point, I'm actually saving about £12/month on current cost.

    Nekki said: legislation gets passed

Always read the parliamentary notes on enforcement of new legislation, literally 9 out of 10 times they have no way to enforce anything and acknowledge that.

  • @ikoula have some pretty decent offers in their discount section

I'm keeping an eye on things, but if there's any hint that they're going to start using this against anyone other than those profiting from piracy, then I'll just start running something of a home server for me only. Not worth the gamble.
