My home network is as follows:

Internet
TomatoUSB router
|------------------------|-------------------|
PS3 Home Computer Home Server

All the three computers connect to the internet like no ones business. I am looking to setup a permanent openvpn connection for my PS3. I cannot install openvpn on the PS3, was wondering if any of you have knowledge on tutorials to setup a squid http proxy on HomeServer and setup HTTP proxy on PS3 to that to essentially get:

Internet
TomatoUSB router
|
PS3

I have setup many openvpn clients on linux so that would not be a problem for Home Server just wondering if there is anything tricky with HomeServer ( only one ethernet jack - can add more if required)

I found this today do not know if it will work:

I tried to setup a VPS so that I can use it as Proxy Server using he large amount of IPv6 addresses. I know it won't work on many sites, but I'm testing something and can't figure it out. Any suggestions please? I'm willing to put any operation system on the box that you think might fit best / is easiest to get this going. Thanks in advance for a "kick in the right direction" :-) Samuel

I'm currently looking into methods to automate the DDOS detection to (at least) alert me if an attack is taking place, and possibly automatically black-hole the ip(s) under attack.

Currently I am planning for my network to look something like this:

upstream----cisco_switch---servers

                |

                |---network_sniffer

...or in other words, I'll be spanning the port connecting to my upstream provider and mirroring that out to my sniffer box. The sniffer box will likely be a vanilla debian box, so I'll have the full set of unix tools to utilize. I'll have an eBGP peering session between myself and my provider, so setting up a black-hole (ala rfc3882) to the destination ip of the attack isn't going to be a problem.

I'm also considering sticking a vyatta box in front of the cisco switch and having that do the handle the BGP session do any sniffing inline.

Where I am having a bit of a hard time with all of this is with finding the right tool to use for bandwidth statistics on a per IP basis. I've always used tcpdump, but that doesn't seem as useful in this case. Tools like iptraf, ntop, and bandwidthd are great...but don't seem to lend themselves to automation very well. Right now I'm strongly considering sflow if I go with the provider-to-cisco topology, or trying to work this out with iptables on the vyatta box. At that point it's just a couple of lines of code to diff between output sampled at two spaces in time. However, the sflow method seems like it could get overly complicated for what I need, and the iptables method doesn't seem like it'd scale well if I had multiple /24 blocks.

But I'm sure that someone's done this before...does anyone have any insight that they can give me on how they accomplished this?

Thanks in advance.

I have had a few people asking about 64mb plans and then I spotted that old discussion here that god dragged up from the past and people seem to be keen to get them.

So I had a play and got a WP site running under Arch Linux with 64mb, then I dropped that down to 32mb and it told me to go **** myself so back up to 64mb it went.

Was interesting stuff I suppose its really a plan size for the die hards out there, just wondering what sort of real demand there is in the community?

The other issue being is the price, monthly 64mb XEN deals are a PITA the price, I was thinking 1.00 - 1.25 (EUR) p/month, the problem with that is that the processing fee's make it almost pointless to offer on a month by month basis, So I would like some out of the box ideas from the only community that would be interested in this and I may put up the following plan today.

XEN PV (Netherlands)
1 Core (minimum would be 3.06 GHz)
64mb Ram
64mb Swap
5GB HDD Space
5GB Offsite Backup
1000 mbit

I am thinking along the lines of either 3.00 EUR p/quater, 6.00 EUR s/Annual or 10 EUR p/year or if you wanted to pay monthly I need some fresh ideas on that, e.g. combo accounts/group buy.

If someone can come up with a good idea for a 64mb box and is prepared to publicly show it off I may just give you one for free for a few months.

Hi all,

I've been playing around for VPSs for a few months now. I have no real expertise with Linux and command line, but I am trying to learn using tutorials. I've been able to set up a VPN, Wordpress site, Transmission server, and install DavMail (for scraping email from an Exchange web interface).

I have two VPSs - one AlienVPS, and one based in the UK. I think i've got the UK one sorted (a little wordpress website for my girlfriends music lesson business), but I'm still using the other as a 'play around' server.

I've stumped myself on installing a lemp suite so that i can install ajaxplorer (web file manager). I used one of the VPS scripts from here (minstall I think it was), but the install threw up a few errors along the way (I stupidly ran it as a non sudo user). I ended up with nginx working, but php not working. I tried removinx nginx and reinstalling, and now I'm stuck with no files in the nginx folder. This means I cannot start the service :(

I'd ordinarily reinstall the OpenVZ template and start again (harsh I know, but I am a newb), but this time I'd like to see if I can get some help on it first. Anyone? Please?

I signed up for a $7 2GB VPS on chicagovps (they make this available occasionally), to test their service, and if good, to move one of my sites.

I don't expect top of the range performance from such an offer - they must have oversold by a lot.

What I do expect is decent customer support. My VPS went down on 12th, and has been offline so far. Hitting the boot button on control panel does nothing. Support tickets have gone unanswered.

To be clear, this is not a minor issue like help in installing or managing the server, but the VPS itself being down and not bootable for three days.

I shudder to think of my fate, had this type of support happened after I moved my site over. It earns decent money, and I'd have lost several hundered dollars in these 3-4 days.

Unless there is any improvement in their support, I won't renew my account, and I suggest anyone who values their site/business do the same.

Does anyone have any recommendations for a USA VPS provider, 128mb should be sufficient that will allow CBS to be streamed over VPN.

Hello LET!

I have a Xen VPS which has DirectAdmin running on a 32bit version of CentOS. It now has 1 GB of dedicated RAM and 1 GB swap. Previously, it had 512 MB. I upgraded few weeks back.

The problem I am having (and this is the reason I had upgraded from 512 MB to 1 GB in the first place) is that, the VPS works fine for a few days and then it comes down to it's knees and stops responding and needs to be rebooted. On boot the system starts at around 170 MB of RAM usage and then it swims between 250 and 500 MB. Now this is what happened.

Yesterday after being up for over 20 days I noticed my sites were not opening so I SSHed into the system to check what's going on. The system had exhausted all of it's dedicated RAM and was using the swap memory. Upon doing a ps aux I saw there were around 110 httpd entries and a lot of mysqld entries too. I don't remember exactly how many mysqld entries there were but there were a lot compared to the usual number. I believe this is referred to as 'thrashing'? Anyways, what I find weird is that, upon doing a reboot everything becomes normal. If there is a spike in traffic, the same thing should happen after reboot also, right? But it never does. It plays nice after the reboot.

I am completely lost here and would appreciate if somebody could tell me why this could be happening and point me to the right direction. I want to know if I should be looking into optimizing Apache, MySQL or PHP?

Thanks!

PS: The server powers around 16 domains, of which most get hardly any traffic. There are only 4-5 domains which get traffic.
