Unusual Geographic locations

I've caught the low end VPS bug to the point where I'm loosing way too much sleep trying to find the next world city to conduct network experiments with using a budget offering. For instance, I've pushed google translate way past the limit of sanity and then some, using it to send emails to hosting business telling them they should look into offering VPS plans. Anyway forgoing the usual "why would you want to host there?" knee jerk responses - anyone know any low end box style providers with serious geographic diversity? Generally you can find businesses with offerings to customers in most places, but you run into one of two things: 1) the servers are really just somewhere else 2) the minimum plans are very high end.

Some examples of places I'm looking for:
Alaska, Hawaii, Puerto Rico (actually there are several offerings but with a high end minimums)
Less populated Canada (I have a great plan in Montreal with openvz.ca)
Islands
Antarctica (expensive collocation does exist there)
Asia
Africa
South America
places with only wireless back haul
Moving objects: train freight cars, barges, satellites, be creative - the world needs make less sense (anyone want to start a VPS venture with 4G modems in trailer trucks?)
Area 51 :)
Rural USA

The more remote they are (in terms of Internet connectivity) the better. (although the companies I have mentioned here have great connectivity) As long as a US citizen can legally send money there. (for instance I have found them in places like Iran, but no thanks)

I've only been at this a couple of weeks. I plan to do a write up after I get some more facts and information. I have successfully signed up for (outside of north america & europe):

Australia (exigent.com.au)
Iceland (urpad.net)

and and very happy so far with them. I'm now looking at:

India (vr.org)
Kazakhstan (nhost.kz/vps-vds-serveri)
South Africa (virtualservers.co.za)
Chile (www.boxhosting.cl/vps/)

I did find one in Egypt, but I'm not sure about the current political environment over there.

  • Those are some good offers edis.at. I already have several of those places covered. I might try their Sweden location.

  • @tstover said: Alaska, Hawaii, Puerto Rico (actually there are several offerings but with a high end minimums)

    Very expensive but doable.

@tstover said: Antarctica (expensive collocation does exist there)

Cannot be sold (no commercial activity allowed in Antarctica), uplink only sat also

    @tstover said: Africa

How much BW do you need?

@tstover said: As long as a US citizen can legally send money there. (for instance I have found them in places like Iran, but no thanks)

Many VPS providers in Iran do their payments over Germany and Canada, no issue.

  • AmfyAmfy Member

    @liam said: possibly Sweden

    https://www.oderland.se/clients/cart.php already had LEBs 2+ years ago (OpenVZ, 128Mb RAM,5Gb RAID1 Space, 100Gb Traffic, 3€)

But yes, they seem to be the first "professional" company offering LEBs there ;)

    @liam said: Italy

@prometeus is in business since 15 years?

    @liam said: Iceland

Oh, yes, that's damn nice. And as it looks, they have their own IP-Space, so Abuse shouldn't be a problem :)

@William said: Many VPS providers in Iran do their payments over Germany and Canada, no issue.

    Oh, why that?

@William said: How much BW do you need?

Isn't hetzner charging ~1€ per GB?

  • rds100rds100 Member

@liam maybe he thinks it would be unpatriotic to buy a VPS in Iran. Or is just afraid of the sanctions.

  • @tstover said: Islands

Welcome to the United Kingdom ;)

  • gbshousegbshouse Member, Host Rep

South Africa (and other locations) VPSNine http://www.vpsnine.com/testfiles.php they have promo right now 15% off
    Iceland - Edis

I'm looking for LEB provider in southeast Russia

  • rds100rds100 Member

@gbshouse you can go to the searchengines.ru forum and ask, but it looks down right now.

  • gbshousegbshouse Member, Host Rep

@liam - the question was about providers not quality :)

@rds100 - I'm looking for a provider which routes from Europe to Asia via Russian (I heard that there is a fiber parallel to oil or gas pipeline from Russia to China)

    Thanked by 1Liam
  • -yes http://wiki.openvz.org/Hosting_providers is a great resource, but many of the links are stale. Some don't actually seemed to have VPS, and some are just too high end.

-I read somewhere the Argentines had fiber in Antarctica, but that information might be completely made up.

-Iran (just to use one of many examples) is the sort of place that yes, you can engage in many legit endeavors with from the US, but you are going to quickly find all manor on uninvited attention into your life. Trying to conceal those activities, is a guaranteed way to end up on even shorter "lists".

-In places like Africa where bandwidth is comparatively expensive, then so be it. Still that is no reason not to see plans scaled down enough for circa leb prices. For instance the one in Capetown I'm looking at is about $12USD for 5G, but it does have 384mb ram. I'd like to see that just sliced once more to $6 for 2.5G if that's what it took, but I still might try it out. I haven't found other places (geographically) in Africa with close offers yet.

-The Russian offers I have seen all almost all in Moscow which is cool, but how about something further east. That's one reason I'm trying to get a working payment method to Kazakhsthistan to try out this $7ish plan in Almaty. (yes I understand the routing topography in question)

  • RobertRobert Member

Most of those are out of my ultra LEB price range. Anyone know of any really LEB's in any unusual locations? I'm looking for max 128mb and no more than maybe $3 p/m. The smaller and cheaper the better!

    (already know about EDIS btw)

We have a $3.95 VPS in Iceland if that interests you - http://www.urpad.net/linux-vps.shtml

I'm looking for a provider which routes from Europe to Asia via Russia

The closest thing to a LEB I know to the east of Moscow is http://www.netangels.ru/services/vds/ , from $11/month for 128 MB KVM. Haven't used them so can't really recommend. (and tbh I have a bad opinion about all ex-USSR hosts, so from me it's a "stay away" unless you feel adventurous).
Location-wise it is in Yekaterinburg, and if you're lucky you can get something along those lines to Japan (substract 30ms due to ADSL I'm tracing this from):

     4. 80.91.16.98 0.0% 5 31.4 29.2 28.2 31.4 1.3
     5. 80.91.27.2 0.0% 5 28.1 29.0 28.1 29.5 0.5
     6. ge-3-0-3.tmen-rgr1.ur.ip.rostelecom.ru 0.0% 5 29.0 39.1 28.9 75.8 20.6
     7. so-3-0-0.khbr-rgr1.dv.ip.rostelecom.ru 0.0% 5 119.8 123.7 118.6 130.7 5.6
     8. 118.155.194.97 0.0% 5 151.4 158.6 151.4 165.3 5.2
     9. cm-ote234.kddnet.ad.jp 0.0% 5 153.2 153.2 147.2 159.1 4.3
    10. 202.239.171.10 0.0% 5 149.1 153.0 147.0 161.9 5.8
    11. www.kddilabs.jp 0.0% 5 145.0 144.1 140.9 146.7 2.5

And "if you're lucky", that's because the ISPs still prefer the "around-the-world" routes greatly, and the direct cables to China and Japan are utilized only by a few carriers and to few of the destinations.

I found Kazakh provider (the @Spirit's link) and looking glass showed that they have route from Hong Kong to Europe via China and Russia. Ping from HK to Kazakhstan something like 300-350ms.

@gbshouse said: Ping from HK to Kazakhstan something like 300-350ms.

I'd say that's a sign they have asymmetric routing, specifically HK->KZ goes directly, but KZ->HK goes around the world. This is also a very common thing to see.

  • gbshousegbshouse Member, Host Rep

@rm_ go to http://www.vr.org/lg/ and try to trace 178.89.159.52 from Hong Kong, you can see that's going thru TransTelecom (217.150.56.161 [Belgorod, Russia according to Maxmind), AS20485) but the strangest trace is from India:

Right, but if you actually get that VPS and try to traceroute HK from it, you'll notice that it invariably goes via the Europe.

For example see how it is with my new vKS from OVH in HK. From the vKS to my home, it goes directly via HKIX:

Host Loss% Snt Last Avg Best Wrst StDev

It should've went to the east from me and towards Asia, wtf London is even doing there. If it did, we'd see not 260ms, but much less. So that's what I mean by asymmetric routes, and I'm sure with that KZ host you'll see the same (or worse, via the US).

    http://lg.ttk.ru/

I tested my prefix and I see that they're using HKIX RS to route to us, so that confirms they are accepting HKIX RS routes. My guess is because the AS path length is the same (HKIX RS includes their own ASN), the metric is compared. Metric is 441 for my routes via HKIX, metric to Tata is only 410.

Should go poke your ISP to see if they'll escalate to TTK.

I would really really like to see a LEB in Taiwan, or even anything close! Not only is it geographically interesting, the network routing can range from insane to flawless depending on which provider you look at :)

    http://www.taiwancloudhosting.com/
The VPSes they list are in America! They claim to have ones actually located in Taiwan, but when I contacted them they did not seem responsive...
