OVH micro geoVKS preliminary pricing, EUR 19.99 per year

This was just linked on their maling list (and on twitter since 8 Jul, but who uses twitter anyway)

EUR 19.99 per year

Specs for the current beta:

 1 vCPU Processor
 128MB of RAM
 Storage 5GB
 500GB monthly traffic
 10Mbps bandwidth
 IPv4 + IPv6 addresses
Unauthorised UDP traffic forbidden (i.e. all ports firewalled except port 53)
Outgoing traffic forbidden on port 25

In reality it also has 128 MB vSwap, and the 10 Mbps limit is not enforced.
No TUN/TAP, and they will not turn it on, claiming possible abuse.
It will suck if the b/w limit will be turned on as it goes to full 'production'.
And even if not, at this price I only see a reason to pay for it if you want one in HK.

  • So what you're saying is....

    Just get an EDIS?

  • No. Just get to Prometeus :D ( not saying I want in HK)

  • EUR 19.99 per year for HONGKONG geovks? Well that's cheap!

OVH HK location is for me interesting because proper APNIC IP + native IPv6. We don't see this often in budget VPS world. I expected RIPE IP here :)

  • Will someone buy it?

  • @ErawanArifNugroho said: Will someone buy it?

for eur 19.99 per year in HK? ME!

  • :D Hehe..

It can't send mail if I use it for Wordpress, so, what will we use it for?

  • rm_rm_ IPv6 Advocate, Veteran

You could send E-Mail via a GMail account, connecting to it via TLS port 587. Will work for one or two occasionally. But probably not an option if you need to send a lot of mail at a time.

  • I just need to send email every time a comment comes to my blog.
If for the mx, I already use Gmail as my email manager :)

Do you have any suggestion for running/sending email from another port?

Wordpress can use plugin for mail purpose. That's easy.

    --ninja edit
    This is one example: http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/wp-mail-smtp/
There are many plugin like this.

  • Like Fast Secure Contact Form? and use Wordpress for sending the email, instead of PHP?

I've tried that, and didn't work if the vps is blocked at port 25

  • I guess the traffic limitations (port&UDP) will be removed once the servers are out of beta and actually cost money.

Wordpress / PHP will try to connect to external SMTP server (Gmail, etc.), and different port also, for example 587. Just give it a try.

    Very unlikely.
OVH VPS have the same limitations.

They have confirmed on the mailing list that there will also be a montly payment option. Though my guess is it will be more expensive than just 19.99/12.

As for who would buy one, I'd strongly consider it only if there will be no 10 Mbps bandwidth limit, e.g. mine in Hong Kong currently pulls at 50 MEGABYTES PER SECOND from the Cachefly test file, and that's not in the same DC/rack, that's via HKIX and from a different provider... Would be way too horrible to switch to 10 Mbps from that :p

  • WTF, so all the UDP is blocked? o.O!
    And my gameservers? u_u

  • bamnbamn Member

I'd probably grab a few at that price to add to my cPanel DNS cluster

@William said: OVH VPS have the same limitations.

They even advertise their virtual Kimsufis as mailservers so i don't think they have port 25 blocked. Do you have a link on that?

They seem to have "easier" rules now:

Das TCP Protokoll ist verfügbar, der Traffic ist auf 100 Mbit/s begrenzt.
Das UDP Protokoll ist verfügbar, der Traffic ist auf 50 Mbit/s begrenzt.
Das ICMP Protokoll ist verfügbar, der Traffic ist auf 32 kbit/s limitiert.

    (TCP 100, UDP 50, ICMP 32Kbit)

  • Well 100mbit TCP and 50 mbit UDP sounds a lot better than no port 25 TCP and no UDP :P Might be interesting for gameservers or likewise.

Haha, so it looks like this was a part of a cunning plan, operation "honeypot"
    http://status.ovh.net/?do=details&id=3171
Also I don't get why ticket says "10Mbps TCP, 100 Mbit UDP".
Would have preferred it the other way round, lawl.

P.S.: Checked mine, the limit still not in place, can download at 25-30 Mbytes/sec from Cachefly.

  • Per YEAR!?
    Wow....

    Wow....

What's to wow about? Completely unimpressive for a 128 MB OpenVZ, and even the HK location won't save that offer as far as I'm concerned, if they turn on the 10Mbps limit.
Oh I see it's your first comment here, welcome to the site! Hope you won't be so easily amused after you check out what's usually offered around here for that price or even less:

    or http://www.lowendbox.com/?s=15/year&searchsubmit=Find
    or even http://www.lowendbox.com/?s=12/year&searchsubmit=Find

  • Do they take only credit cards or also paypal payment?
